GUESTS ARRIVE
ATJEKYL ISLAND
—t —
Home of Millionaires will
Soon Be Crowded with
Quests
The season Is practically open at
Jekyl Island and a number of the mem
bers of the club and their friends are
now at tho beautiful home of the mil
llomaires. and more are arriving daily.
By January first it is expected that
this great winter resort will be crowd
ed with guests, and the season will
be the most brilliant in many respects
Ip tho history of the club.
Many Improvements have been made
on the Island during the summer sea
son; the electric light plant is in op
eration for the first time, new roads
have been built for the guests, while
many improvements have been made
on the different cottages.
Poe’* Smile of Genius.
His mouth was like Apollo’s bow on
bent and in the natural curve said sor
row, with Imagination, but when
wreathed into smiles by any cheering
Inflorescence of bis soul, disclosing a
set of Ivory teetb as evenly set as the
opal wulls of Eden, was absolutely cap
tivating and beautiful. So remarka
bly pleasing was this transition from
sadness to sunshiny gladness of hilari
ty that I now seem to see him smiling
before me, lighting up the dim vistas of
my memory as the rain fraught light
ning does the darkness of a summer
night. But there was this peculiarity
about his smile, which 1 do not remem
ber ever to huvo seen In uny other per
son—namely, that It did not appear to
be the result of gladness of heart alto
gether or gladness mixed with sorrow,
but a pleasing satire, a smiling review
of all that had Just been said by him,
like the triumphant world renovating
laughter of tho weeping heavens, ex
presalve of that beautiful Apollonian
disdain which seemed to say, “What
you ‘see through a glass darkly’ I be
hold through the couched eye of un Il
luminated seer.” Not only did he look
this, but be felt it—felt it with all bis
Inmost soul. It was, in the truest ac
ceptance of the term, a smile of genius.

Cntrblnu BooU Title*.
Most readers would bo at a loss to
discover the source of some book titles
and would forget If they ever knew
that “The World Well Lost” Is bor
rowed from Dryden, that “A Dream
and a Forgetting” Is Wordsworth’s
phrase and that it was Othello who
loved “Not Wisely, hut Too Well.” We
might add that In spite of the famili
arity of the famous “Elegy” not one
reader In ten will trace Mr. Hard?’*
"Far From the Madding Crowd" to
Gray or will connect “One of Tliroo"
with the mariner who held the wed
ding guest with tils glittering eye. Mr.
Hardy’s titles, like Howells', are al
most invurlably attractive. “A Pair of
Bine Eyes.” “Two on a Tower” and
“The Iteturn of the Native” stimulrte
curiosity.
Often a proverb or any other famil
iar phrase is as good as a. rocoy.izod
quotation. “Put Yourself In His Place”
and “It Is Never Too Date io Mend”
were strokes of genius on the part of
Charles Rondo. and “Soooml Thoughts.”
“Dead Men’s Sh is” and "The Itoot of
All Evil” are hardly less inviting.—

Little Emerson--Mamma, 1 find no
marginal note In elucidation of this
expression, which 1 observe frequently
to occur in my volume of “Fairy Tale
Classics”—“with baled breath.” What
Is the proper Interpretation of the
phrase?
Mamma—“With bated breath,” my
son, commonly occurs In fairy tales.
Your father often returns from pisca
torial excursions with bated breath.
The phrase in such instances, howev
er, has no significance as applying to
the bait employed to allure the fish,
but Is merely an elastic term of du
bious meaning and suspicious origin,
Utilized, os 1 have already Intimated,
simply bt‘cause of the sanction which
It has gained by customary usage in
fairy tales generally. Do you compre
hend, Emerson?

The Per*vorlm{ Eel,
Young eels in passing up a river
liow the most extraordinary perse
verance in overcoming all obstructions.
The large flood gates-sometimes fif
teen feet in height—on the Thames
might be supposed sufficient to bar the
progress of a fish the size of a darning
needle. But young eels have a whole
some Idea that nothing can stop them,
and in consequence nothing docs.
Speaking of the way in which they as
cend flood gates and other harriers, one
writer says: “Those which die stick to
the post: others, which get a little high
er, meet with the same fate, until at
last a layer of them Is formed which
enables the? rest lo overcome the dilii
culty of the passage.
“The mortality resulting from such
•forlorn hopes' greatly helps to account
for the difference in the number of
young eels on their upward migration
and that of those which return down
stream in the autumn. In some places

A young lady who lead been pouring

having toward the end of the affair
become somewhat fatigued, sat down
In a ended corner of the room, where
she witnessed the following Inc ident:
A young man came In and made bis

apologizing for his lateness.
“Awfully glad to see you. Mr.
Blank,” si'id the hostess. “So good of
you to ccnie, and all the way from
New York too. But where is your
brother?”
"I am commissioned to tender his
regrets. You soex we are so busy just
now that It was impossible for both of
us to get away, aud so we tossed up to
see which of us should come.”
“How nice! Such an original ide-a!
And you won.”
“No,” said the young man absently!
