■’rieuds when that man you see over
there by the cigar counter pnsticd his
way through the crowd, grasped lleed
by the hand and said effusively: ‘Hello,
Torn? old boy! How do you do?*
“Reed responded in a manner that
was more of a shake for the man
than for bis hand and went on wilb
his talk. When our friend over there
had edged out of the crowd, someone
said: ‘You didn't seem to be happy
over him, Reed. Who is your friend,
anyway?’
“Reed drawled out, ‘He’s a fellow

who don’t want to know him than any
other man in the United States.’ ’’—De

When Napoleon entered Genoa lr
1805, the rich patricians of the city
exerted themselves to gain the favoi
of the conqueror by all sorts of flat
tering attentions. The most elaborate
of these was a banquet patterned aftei
the famous one offered by Antony to
Cleopatra.
The tables were set in an artificial
garden, floating on pontoons, which
were towed out to sea during the prog
ress of the feast. At the conclusion oi
the banquet—again in imitation of An
tony and Cleopatra—all the costly golf
and silver plate was flung into tlie sea.
This little tribute of honor to the cm
peror was not so expensive as it seem
ed, for the floating garden was sur
rourded with nets, and the plate wat
subsequently recovered.

HEADQUARTERS FOR TOYS.
Glogauer’a ia a Veritabla Mecca for
this Lins of Goods this Season.
One o fthe prettiest line of toys ever
displayed in this city is tbs magnifi
cent one now being shown at Gib
gauer’s. —— •
This energetic and cievsr Bruns-
W’ick merchant can be well called the
pioneer toy dealer of this city. When
most of us were still school boys, his
old store at the corner of court house
square and Newcastle street wag head
quarters for toys and fireworks.
The condition is not materially
changed, only for improvement today
and his large and handsome store is
stocked with a very beautiful Use of
everything calculated to please the
little ones.
He invites Santa Claus to call
and look over the stock before mak
ing purchases.
SOME PRETTY SHOW WINDOWS
Mrs. M. Isaac Displaying Big Lins of
Holiday Goods.
The dry goods store of Mrs. M. Isaac
on Newcastle street, is a beautiful
place these days, and especially
the show windows, which are dressed
by a window dresser who has no
epual in this city.
Mrs. Isaac has purchased a large
and beautiful line of holiday goods,
and many pretty presents are to be
found at her store. She is the lead
er of low prices in Brunswick, and
alwavs satisfies her customers.
A BEAUTIFUL STORE.
Fleming & Waff Have Many Pretty
Christmas Prsents. <
The store of Fleming & Waft, on
Newcastle street, is easily one of the
prettiest in the city, and this well
known firm has one of the largest
lines of Christmas goods ever seen in
the city.
This store is in a class all alone in
Brunswick, and handles everything
in the line of books, pretty and valu
ble crockery, pocket books and every
thing in the novelty line.
The store was crowded with Christ
ma sshoppers yesterday and the firm
reports unusually good Christmas bus
iness. They can satisfy anyone in
earch of a present, for afriend, relative
of for the little ones. They also have
a large line of fireworks.
