Christmas eve tomorrow, a paradox,
hut a true one.
Cotton is now Belling at thirteen
cents. Superstitious f-rmcr had tet
ter take notice.
The question wall many ju.-l Icw
is not what toi buy, hut what to buy
it with.
If congress would remain at recess
forever the average newspaper would
contain a better class of reading mat
ter.
Why not bring tue democratic con
vention to the south this year, Dem
ocratic voters have been going to the
east and the west, (unpleasant
thought) for a long time.
Judge Speer lined two Macon law
yers a hundred dollars for contempt
of court Monday, but remitted the
fine. It Is not expensive alter all to
scrap in the United States court.
Governor Jeff Davis of Arkansas
believes in bringing down other things
besides justice on ail kinds of heads.
He brought down a cane on that of
Supreme Court Judge Wood a day or
two ago.
The Valdosta Times is jumping on
Congressman Griggs because Hat
gentleman is trying to establish an
other division of the federal court
district. The esteemed Times should
like all largo bodies move slowly.
When Governor Terrell appointed
Hcu. W E. Kay of this city as one of
the coimnUsono.-s to t!to Si. l.outs ex
position, he paid a compliment to
Brunswick and one of her most pro
gressive and pub i; spirited citizens
He has interested himself in this Geor
gia building matter here in Brunswick
a decided and conclusive eviaence 01
the fact that Brunswick will do her
full duty in the matter. We delight
to honor Col. Kay, for he is always
among the first to respond to any
movement, when he becomes convinc
ed that it has for its object the bet
terment of our condition and the pro
free* of Brunswick. f
A GREAT OPPERTUNITY.
Messrs. Hughes, Barrett and Wash
ington, the commissioners from Geor
gla to the great St. I/wiis exposition,
to be held hi that city, were in Bruns
wick yesterday In the interest of the
Georgia building to he erected at the
exposition.
They met a committee of business
men in the mayor's office and the mat
ter was fully discussed. This to our
mind is a great proposition for the pco
-1 ~ie of tho state, in general and we of
| Brunswick in particular. These well
known and prominent business men
of the state of Georgia do not come
to us of a mission of charity. They
j come pointing out to us the fact that
we are up to a matter of vital in
terest to our people and o-ur city.
It is necessary that the great state
of Georgia should have a home at the
j exposition, in which to house its exhib
its and entertain its friends. The con
stitution of the state of Georgia says
it Is not within the province of the
state legislature to appropriate money
for these purposes (an unwise clause
to our mind and one that should he
repealed) and the progressive, ener
getic and broad minded poo„1 ■ rf
Georgia have said we will do It our
selves; our state shall not. be a lag
gard In this the greatest Industrial ex
position In the history of the world:
we will see to it that we are not only
represented In the way of n proper
exhibit of the resources of the grand
est state in the south. Us empire com
monwealth, but we will see to It that
sbe will have a portentous building.
In a conspicuous place In the grounds,
that will reflect her glory everywhere
For this purpose the gentlemen are
touring the state asking for funds from
the different cities for the cause
outlined.
Brunswick is the second city in
south Georgia, the greatest seaport on
the south Atlantic, the largest lum
ber port in the world. We must go
to the other nations of the world,
the other sections of this our own
United States with tins story of prog
ress and opportunity. Here is our
chance, we cannot afford to lose it.
Other cities in this section have con
tributed handsomely to the movement
we cannot fall to do otherwise.
We direct the attention of tue mayor
and council, tho count'- commstumors
and to our people as a whole, to this
very important maLtor. Hots get to
gether and say to the oilier cities ol
Georgia, though we live near the sad
sea waves, aud hear its soothing song
by day and night, the sweetness of the
lulllby has uol lulled us into the slum
ber of inaction and inertia, that we
arc wide awake to those thii-gs a ‘ al
involve our material welfare and arc
at all times ready to respond to their
demands.
Lets get up a contribution that in its
solf will best evidence the progres
siveness of the city by tho sea.
If every man, woman and child in
this city would learn the meaning
of provincialism and then steer clear
against it, the municipal ship of Bruns
wick would avoid many tempestuous
seas, and erngy rocks and in tire course
of time would land safe and secure in
the harbor of commercial and indus
trial success. Try it on and see.
Our friends from the interior, who
were here yesterday, were Indeed sur
prised at th gigantic shipping inter
ests of (ho port of Brunswick. They
were astounded when they lea rues
that this was tho first lumber and
second naval stores report in tho
world. It is a fact however and in
the language of that oft quoted queen,
"the half has ne.-er been l< M.
The republicans are finding bairn
in the fact that Mayor-elect McCl 1-
land, having been born in Dresden,
while his parents were there tempora
rily, precludes him from ever bel. g
a candidate for tbe presidency. This
may or may not be tru?, but the young
nran can have a whole liuuclyto do with
aiding seme of his democratic friends
in the matter.
If the people of this city will get
together on the question of raising
a fund for the 000-gta building at Ist.
Louis we will do some work in ihat
line that surely means better things
for Brunswick in future. There ate
thousands of people right here in this
country, people of means, who would
locate here if they were made to know
what we have to offer them in the
way of reasources and opportunities
for investment-
