Resignation was Accepted
at Meeting in New York
Yesterday
BARRS NAMED FOR THE PUCE
A New Board of Directors Was Also
Elected, of Which the Former
President is Chairman*—Oth-
, er Changes.
New York, December 30.—The
much-talked of meeting of the direct
ors of the Seaboard Air Line Rail
road Company was held in this city
today and the expected happened. It
has been pretty well known in Wall
street and other financial circles for
a number of days that the ascendency
of Thcs. F. Ryan in this property
would necessitate a change in the
official board of the line.
•The meeting today was held in the
local offices of the comp* iy and was
attended by a fairly good representa
tion of the directors. The most im
portant matter handled by the board
was the acceptance of the resignation
of John Skelton Williams, of Richmond j
Be president of the Seaboard. In his ]
letter of resignation, president Wil- j
liams annnouced that the action was
due to the fact that he desired to de
vote Us entire time to his large bank
ing interest both in this city and in
the south. However, it is understood
in financial circles here that the old
feud between Williams and Ryan, to
gether with the fact that the latter
has lately bought up large slices of
the Seabord, is accountable for the
resignation. ,

Tliai-I -rny Facial Appearance. j
In 1849 or 1850 Charlotte Bronte I
wrote of Thackeray: “To me the broad
brow seems to express Intellect Cer
tain linos about the nose and cheek be
tray the satirist and the cynic; the
mouth indicates a childlike simplicity,
perhaps oven a degree of irresoiutenese
in consjis tency—weaknejs, In Short, but
a weakness not unamlable.” And Mr.
Motley, writing to bis wife in 1858,
said: "I believe you have never seen
Thackeray. He lias the appearance of
a colossal infant—smooth, white, shin
ing, ringlety hair, flaxen, alas, with ad
vancing years; a roundish face with a
little dab of a nose, upon which it is a
perpetual wonder how he keeps his
spectacles,”
This broken nose was always a source
of amusement to Thackeray himself.
Hu caricatured it In his drawing, he
frequently alluded to it in his speech
and in his letters, and he was fond of
repeat-ng Douglas Jerrold’s remark to
him when he was to standas godfather
to a friend's son, “Lord, Thackeray, I
hope you won’t present the child with
