POETRY IN MACHINERY.
CtlorfloiiM Work of (lie Almlt'rn ItrniM'r
a l'’ll Subjrel l‘'vr tel,
I’oetry and art have these many
years pictured the hibors of men and
women In the harvest Held. From
Ruth, the gleaner, to Millet's “Reaper'*
we have fetid the long, inelaucholy slo
ry of the toilers gathering with crude,
wasteful, Inhuman band tools the crops
of the world that the notions might
have bread. Rightly understood, these
two women, living no far apart, are pa
tbette monuments to Ilia astounding
stupidity that could permit such things
when, as wMitsv sue, by talcing thought
a machine can release humanity from
such senseless labor. With a singular
perversity artists have delighted to
pnlut pictures of foolish toll. 10von now
the critics tell us that neither the mow
er, tho rttapor, the thrashing machine
nor the sulky plow la a lit subject fora
picture.
Never was there a greater blunder.
The glory and majesty of our mighty
harvests, won for the feeding of the
worhl with so little labor that the vast
whealticlds seem lonely, the smbklng
clouds of chety and straw blown high
In the air from whirring thrashers, the
great companies of men and horses
marching to the hortson as the plows
turn stile sweeps of oil to the sun, the
gaug drills sowing mtlu long lacclilco
threads over the brown earth where
springs the growing crop these and a
hundred other scenes are tit themes for
any poet. In our fields are no sad mid
tltudes of ill paid, short lived pennants,
crushed and held by the Iniquity of the
sickle. Why sing the sad song of the
reaper a grand, inspiring epic of
tho harvesting machine awaits the i>oet
and painter who can see and under
stand? -Charles Barnard In Reader.
