Wonder If there Is another solicitor
of a city court in the state of Ueor
git who has a newspaper to represent
him personally tn the politics and
other "things" of a community, as is
the case here'in Brunswick?
The people of the soul It mourn

close to the great Southern heart
We have always known that there

A LOSS TO BRUNSWICK'S PUBLIC
WORKS’ DEPARTMENT.
The News Is more than sorry that
Capt. Tobias Newman has seen fit to
retire from the position of chairman
of the committee on public works in
the present city administration. For
six or seven years Capt. Newman has
served in that capacity, and it is a
tact that Brunswick has never had a
more faithful worker in this special
line. He has a splendid knowledge of
the routine work that comes under
the public works department; he lias
made the question of street improve
ment a study fpr years and with all,
he Is possessed of a degree of energy
and civic pride that made him wel!
nigh indispensable In that |dcpari
ment. There is not a piece of im
provement in Brunswick's publi--
public works department that does no
bear the earmarks of the hard and
Indefatigable work of this very ener
gefle member of council, and the peo
ple of this city will regret that any
emergency has ar sen whereby tlr
city will not have his magnificent
ability and splendid experience in
ttie work.
On the part of the people of this
city the Nyws earnestly hopes that
if any uifferences exist between Capt
Newman and other members of conn
ci 1. or Capt. Newman and any other
city officials, they may be speedily
and amicably adjusted in order that
the city may nave the benefit of his
service as chairman of tiie public
works department, as long as lie re
mains in the council.
the mournful moralist.
Tho echoes of the convention of the
moral purity people, which has jusl
finished a session at Chicago, con
firm the worst fears of the human
race that they are not. worth while.
It fa positively appalling, when this
sort of people gets together and ar
raigns common tones, now desperate
ly mean and unworthy and unfit we
all are to survive. The conclusion Is
irroßlstahly borne In upon us that we
are very lucky that the fate of Sodom
and Gomorrah has not been observed
by omnipotence ns a precedent and
that the guardianship of the falling
sparrow and the tempering of the
wind to the shorn lamb have been
substituted for the self-guidance of
lhe power that rules us.
There Is a saddening sameness In
all such meetings and In the subjects
they discuss, and the denunciations
they Issue forth. They are not new.
The .lordan prophets spoke of the
special evil which absorbs the at
tention of most of these purity people
to this day, and we beg pardon for as
surlng them that they might find
some new and far more Interesting
material in the old Testament. We
also beg the privilege of believing
that most of these people are simply
neurotics, imagining vain and wicked
things that are not so In any essen
tial application to their fellow beings
generally, and that the world is a
great deal better than their festering
Imaginations paint it. It would inti
mate to them th tne gentliest manner
posihle that they do not know it an,
and whal little they do know is mostly
not so and In the wrong direction, if
it were true.
Judge 9ymines evidently does not
believe In the city oourt of Bruns
wick and judging by his remarks at.
Monday night's mass meeting (al
though the organ of the solicitor of
that court could only see 47 at tho
meeting), he tninks the court would
be better off without a solicitor.
When Captain Tobe Newman re
signed from the city committee or
public works the people of Brunswick
lost the most useful inun In the pres
ent department of public works. He
has done a great work for Bruns
wick and It Is a great pity that he
has resigned from tue position ho has
filled so well.
