HEAD OF WOMEN’S
CLUBS SPEAKS
AT CONVENTION
Atlanta, May ll.—Development of
a ‘‘Socialized conscience” was describ¬
ed here tonight by Mrs. Thomas G
Winter, of Minneapolis, president o:
the General Federation of Women’s
Globs, as the “first push off toward a
new morality.” This she declared
“is shown in a change that has gone
on almost unperceived during- the last
generation.”
Speaking before the mid-biennia
of the council here, Mrs. Winter illus¬
trated her definitions of “socialized
conscience” by declaring that' “our
old conception of charity—the giving
doles to the unfortunates—has fad¬
ed into disrepute. What, gifts' must
he given are now regarded as
would think of a temporary medicine
to meet an immediate demand, hue w-.
are not satisfied with such a solution
it looks ugly to us. Nothing really
satisfies us except to set in motion
force sthat will wipe out the need
charity, through public
through temperance, through
trial conditions. We do not ward
paupers as an eternal means of sat¬
isfying our benev(|ent superiority.
Wo want self respecting, seif r; job
ing human beings on a level with
selves.”
Mre. Winter cited history in sup
port of her presentation of the
“tiansforming vitality of an idea,”
adding “Certain new great ideals are
striking the gong today.” She said
she believed the biggest danger fac¬
ing the old world “in this new age is
that of this huge mechanism, this
even more intricate and more marve¬
lous machine of modern civilization.
We get Lo tliink of life in terms; ot

Vi", ilizalion is indeed materialistic
When it thus forgets; and
Ism is dust ami ashes in she mouth of
every one who feeds on it alone.”
The remedy, the federation presi¬
dent asserted, “is to realize our eter-
11111 individualism.” The very “dis
satisfaction with tile grinding busi
in-ss iff civilization is producing
counter-irritant,” she continued, “a
vocal and vociferous clamor for

sion, satisfaction and a real share
in the great game. Sometimes the
self-expression is discord, the satis¬
faction gross, the game mere mad¬
ness. When we turn from our fear
o fa smooth, hard relentless civiliza¬
tion, that is only business dominant,
we face' the other fear of something
that seems like a range of active vol
canoes. It bursts out in blocs, farm¬
ers, laboi ites, feminists,
demanding that law silculd be taken
out of the hands of authorities and

Did you ever know how big cities

use some new fad treatment that is
mere guesswork, you don’t have to
smear things on your face in si vain
effort to get rid of eruptions. Erup¬
tions come from blood impurities and
a lack of rich blood-cells. S. S. S.
builds new blood-cells. This is why
S. S. S. routs out of your system the
Impurities which cause boils, pim¬
ples, blackheads, acne, blotches, ec¬
zema, tetter, rash. That’s why S. S. S.
has done such wonderful work in free¬
ing thousands from the scourge of
rheumatism. S. S. S. is also a remark¬
able flesh-builder. That’s why under¬
weight people can quickly build up
their lost flesh, get back their normal
weight, pink, plump cheeks, bright
eyes, and “pep." S. S. S. is sold at.
all good drug stores. The large size
is more economical.

Take Salts to Get Rid of
Toxic Acid.
.iieumatism is no respecter of age,
color or rank. If not the most
agerous of human afflictions it is one
of the most painful. Those subject to
rheumatism should cat no sweets for
awhile, dress as warmly as possible,
avoid any undue exposure and above
all, drink lots of pure water.
Rheumatism is caused by uric acid
or body waste matter, and is often gen¬
erated in the bowels and absorbed into
the blood. It is the function of the
kidneys to filter this poison from the
blood and cast it out in the urine; the
pores of the skin are also a means
ot treeing the blood of this impurity,
In damp and chilly, coiil weather the
skin pores are c i OM ,i thus forcing the
kidneys to do double work; they become
weak and sluggish and fail to eiiini
nate this toxic acid, which keeps ac¬
cumulating and circulating through joints the
system, eventually settling in the
and muscles, causing stiffness, soreness
um l pain, called rheumatism.
At the first twinge of rheumatism get
