prosperity here—all except two, a
young man and young woman, who,
glum and silent, held aloof from all—
two lovers who had quarreled, to
whom the future meant nothing—so it
then seemed—but misery.
The liner left the Channel and
Leaded into the Atlantic, which, in one

attempt of the bitu :ts coal

p. oblems.
"The operators suffer equally
w th the public from certain funda
i> -utal evils affecting the coal in
d. Ary, and share the public’s desire
t< solve them,” Mr. Brydon recently
said.
“On the one hand we have had
9,000 independent bituminous oper¬
ators, with no semblance of organi¬

demand were given free play the
‘r ?t ehroat competition,’ which is

fact, the efficiei ' operator would

in one evening, however, and started
to patch up the quarrel.
Hitt. was walking one way around

Captain Lowry, very pleaesd 'r to see
the couple ha. consented, and the
next day, in presence of all the
cabin passengers, and, according to
Swiss custom, with a boy acting as
“ring bearer,” he performed Hie wed¬
ding ceremony, the first held aboard
any vessel of the United States Lines.
A special dinner and dance followed,
during which the waves, which had
been running high, subsided, as if
fully satisfied m their part in promot¬
ing the deep sea romance.
Marriages at sea are a rarity in¬
deed, yet they are as binding when
performed by the master of a vessel
on the deep as any read by civil
authority or clergyman ashore. Those
performed on vessels flying the Amer
ican flag are indeed hard to set aside,
the “sea lawyers” say, for, having
taken place under Federal laws, they
only be dissolved by appeal to the
Federal courts.
pletest labor monopoly in the world
The United Mine Workers of Amer¬
ica, highly organized and possessed
j of a $15,000,0(10 annual war chest
through the ‘check-off’ system, com
j pelling the operator to collect a tax
o-: labor and turn the proceeds into
union coffers, has secured a strangle¬
hold on coal production. Before war
emergencies gave labor the excuse to
eftect its present monopoly in the
coal field, there was always a steady
supply of the product at satisfac¬
tory prices.”
Counsel for the committee ol
which Mr. Brydon is chairman has
filed formal charges with the United
States Coal Commission, asking
public hearings at which to prove
organized violence on the part of the
union in support of destructive labor
monopoly, ail ruthless breaking up of
labor relations, no matter how
satisfactory, other than those spon¬
sored by the United Mine Workers
of America, and the use of enor¬
warfar mous, secretly expended funds for
on the industry and the
public. The commission has been
asked to abolish or regulate the
“check-off.”
