Shall We Encourage
Investors?
Messrs L. B. and Lewis Holt, Jack
Lovett and Youley Tompkins, prom’-
nent Sandersville capitalists, were
here Tuesday, having driven through •
the country in an automobile, to be pres-1
ent at the meeting of the stockholders of
the Wheeler County Bank, scheduled to j
be held on Tuesday, but owing to the de* t
lay in the charter, was postponed until I
Saturday. Mr. L. B. Holt is one of the |
stockholders in the new'bank, but the;
other above named gentlemen came j
over prospecting. They were all very
much impressed with the surroundings
and looked over some of the property in
and near Alamo with a view to investing
heavily in Wheeler County soil.
These gentlemen have sufficient capi
tal to develop a town like Alamo, and if
they receive the right inducements, we
understand that it is their intention to
purchase a large plot of land and build
the necessary cottages to accommo
date the people who are here now and
make arrangements for those who are
only waiting for an opportunity to come.
This is the kind of people Alamo needs—
people who are able and willing to build
houses, sell property to the laboring
class of people at a price that they can
pay. This class of people that are not
able to pay the prices that necessity
forces them to pay, are the kind of
people that add to a town’s prosperity,
and the class of people we heve, arid
there should be some provisions made
fer them. If the property owners of
this town will encourage these gentle
men and others who have their eyes
on Alamo, and put the price of their land
down where they can afford to invest,
it will be only a short time until our
population will be doubled and the price
of the property will then increase as
the town grows, whereas if there are
no developments made in the way of
increasing the population, we will con
tinue to have high rents, high proper
ty and a slow-going town. This is a
business proposition and should pe con
sidered as such, before the impression
goes out that we are not encouraging
investors.
Let the people of Alamo extend the
glad hand of welcome to investors, and
right here the board of trade ceuld be a
lasting benefit to the town-let them in
vestigate these prospective investors
and find out to what extent they want
to invest and assist them to make the
necessary arrangements to come over
and show them that they are wanted
and that without their money and in
fluence the town cannot thrive and that
if they will invest among us that their
investment will profit them. Now is the
time to strike while the iron is hot.
Never put off for tomorrow what
can de done to-day.

Election of
Senator Bacon
Senator Bacon was on Tuesday last
elected to succeed himself as United
States Senator from Georgia—hie term
having expired in March and his ap
pointment by the governor held him
over until the legislature could meet and
pass a special law calling the election,
and the election formally conducted.
The vote was exceedingly light, com
pared to the normal vote in a heated
campaign. There were only about fifty
votes polled in the county, the majority
of these being cast at the county site.
Some of the precincts in the county
were not heard from and it is supposed
that the polls were not opened in these
districts. The election of Senator Ba
con was assured, had it not been there
are many people who would have gone
out and voted for him, but owing to the
fast that this is a busy season caused
many to remain away from the polls.
' Glanders Investigated
i
I -Dr. M. J. Rattray. Assistant State
| Vetrinarian’ of Atlanta, was here yes
; terday to examine some stock that had
| been reported to have had glanders.
One of Judge Kent’s mules had a typ
ical case and the Judge had the mule
killed at once and burned and has had
his barn thoroughly disinfected so that
no other stock will be infected. Dr.
Rattray examined two horses for Mr.
J. J. Elton and of Mr. Charlie Wooten’s
and while he did not make a positive
diagnosis of glanders he had the horses
quarantined until an examination of the
blood could be made and a defiinite con
clusion reached. The State Veterinar
ian er one of his assistants will be
back in a few days to look after these
horses. In the event the horses have
the glanders it will be necessary to
kill them in order to stop this contag
ious malady. The many friends of
Messrs Eltor, Wooten and Kent hope
that it is not glanders their horses have
While here Dr. Rattray explained
the use of Hog Cholera Serum to a
good many farmers. This Serum is
supplied by the Stale College of Ag
riculture at practically cost. Dr. Rat
tray says that if the farmers would
use this serum, with the proper sani
tation for the hogs, that it will great
ly reduce the loss of hogs by Cholera,
and if the dead hogs are burned and
the barns and hogs’ beds are properly
disinfected that the Cholera germ will
be destroyed and this awful disease
eventually eradicated.
This community has lost heavily du
ring the last twelve months from Chol
era and it does seem that the
farmers and other hog owners would
wake up and make a united effort to
eliminate this destructive malady among
the swine family. Write the State
Vetnnarion, Dr. P. F. Bahnsen and he
will gladly furnish you with valuable
information relative to the eradication
of Cholera and other diseases of stock,
cattle and hogs.
Dr. Fordham, of the Alamo Drug
Campany authorizes us to state that
the Hog Cholera Serum, syringes, dis
infectants and other hog remedies can
be obtained at bis drug store.
