FINE AMTECTURE.
—R, D'Noe
It is certainly a mark of true archiec
ture that a building should rationally
express the purpose for which it was
designed, that a church should not look
like a theater nor a library like a rail
road station, nor a school house like a
sash and door factory, nor should a
court house have the appearance of a
convent—the well designed house or
public building should be significant of,
and adapted to the habits practiced by
its occupants, and should obviously ex
press its purpose. The design of every
building should be based upon structu
ral integrity and honesty of expression;
on right proportion and simplicity of
outline, it shoujd be nothing but what
it is, and it therefore must contain
qualities which whould detract from
. > simple dignity.
Budd simply, whether a cottage or a
castle or a business house; that is one
of the fundatm ntal laws of domestic
architecture, though this law more
readily applies to dwelling houses. A
large living room is obviously more ac
ceptable to t he average family than the i
same space cut up into a -mail parlor (
and reception form In America the
the increased desire for country life 1
has, of late, given riss to an increased
demand for modest, but.well designed,
country hpUSvS, Now the architects i
who have the ability st d the desire to ;
put conscientious study into the plan-i
ning of small houses, realize that this i
class of work involve* even greater;
ingenuity than the work of designing 1
larger structures. The reward on the ;
other hand, is much less. It is ea.iv,
therefore, to «co why so much of the I
work has been done by unskilled men, I
whose lamentable monuments of bad!
taste are scat tered through our country *
aides and subtC.' The requisite for a
country or Jor suburban cottage m an
attractive form. They should nut lie.
built on the plan of 6 square with their
three dimensions equal; an oblong di
mension cohering the same area as that
of the square permits of more exposure ,
brA in the rooms and makes the general
appearance more cheerful and more
satisfying to the occupant. The dignity
of a quiet, facade is dependent upon the
proper spacing of the windows, instead
of several small windows —a great I
opening divided by many mullions wib
give a fine treatment to the facade as;
well better wail »u { -f rt <.e to ri/jms.
The effect of light and shadow, pro
duced by a largo window with cm uni
glass, will often give the effect of
architecturni ornament, and be far
more effective.
The derails and complication? of build
ing, though a small house, may nemm
at the outset, to be many, but there is
away for the owner to got rid of most ’
of hi* worry, and that way is tu placej
a littie real faith in the architect he!
employ*, if you wish a Successful house, I
give the architect free admission into,
your confidence and faith; he wilt wiirl,
many times harder, knowing that veu '
trust his judgment and stand beh.nd
his decisions. For the profession of !
architecture, like that of materia

medica and law, is one in which the
reruka are jt-dged^iy the service per
f'jrmed, and the creation of a beautiful
and useful building—is to the architect
his best reward.
One of the nrnst important conside
rations in building, is the Select ion of‘a
builder Unfortunately, the seb -tion
is generally made by the competition
system of e» ima ing, to give the w ork
to the lowest bidder, without a knowl
edg 'of wh'it.ei he is com, ctent or
skilled. m ■ lb - is ike lock on which
the most c-. fully design- houses may
be wr< ’ d. Compe.ii < n between
compet, T—Siuilders is i- necessarily
bad; but in competition between in
cbmpeuht builders, it will generally
be the mau who counts on making his
profit by undetected scimping and
slighting ’be work, who offer* the low
est bid. The whole proems, -as some
one has remarked. too often results in 1
the survival of the unfittest, and the!
standard of this class of work will'
surely be minimum, because of the
absence of pride on the part of the]
builder, and the final result will be
altogether Unsatisfactory.
The architect cannot determine the
actual cost of a building from tentative
plans, but on the cost of construction,
ne is a safer guide than the building
contractor. In every day practice it is i
shown that contractors’ estimate*
figured in competition and from com
pleted plan* and specification*, often
vary from ten to twenty-five per cent.
A man who is entitled to the profes
sional office of architect to his name,
is fullv capable of constructing, build
ing complete, any struciual design he
may create, and if he is not a skilled
mechanic ie conm ciiot. v *n his atchi
teetural profession. he. is surely not
fitted to superintend the work, and it
is obvious that he is not a full fledged
arceitect.
