Hnw Advertising is Valued
By Some Business Men.
We hoar so many business men make
the idle remark, when they are solicited
for business, "Oh, I’m too well known
in the community to spend money for
advertising." The remark only ex
presses the utter ignorance of the value
of advertising. The customers that
regularly patronize a business house
appreciate seeing the goods that the
merchant carries advertised. If it did
no other good, it would show a willing
ness on the part of the merchant, to
place every convenience at the door of
the customer, which would be appreci
ated by the customer, and thereby be
a constant reminder of your apprecia
tion.
The country is too full ot business
houses and business men tody for any
one to think that the other merchant
cannot offer inducements t hrough news
paper advertisements that will entirely
lure the best customer from him.
The day of advertising is upon us and the
one that thinks he can sit idly by and not
place his goods and business before the
people, will wake up to the realization
of the fact that his competitor has set
him a pace that he would faint to fol- ’
low.
The largest business houses of the
country are the largest advertisers.
They look upon advertising as a part
of their business, and so it is. With
out advertising their business it would
never have reached the stage that it
has. The small man should advertise
his business in proportion to the busi
ness he is doing and thereby increase
the business as other business men
have done and rise to where all syste
matic advertisers will land.
The country store business plan days
have passed and the old methods will
not work in this land of hustling ad
vertisers and the sooner the "well
enough advertised” business men learn
this lesson and get to advertising, the
sooner they will see their business
growing to the extent they push it.
The refreshing showers of the past
few days did the late crops good. Some
sweet potatoes have been finding their
way into the local market, and the
showers of the past few days will give
them another start to growing. The
cane and fall gardens needed the rains.
With the continued seasons we will
make plenty potatoes, cane,turnips,etc.
Just how badly we need repairs on
our school building, we are not pre
pared to say, but are informed that
some repairs should be made. The
sash in the windows are broken and
the cold winter windswill soon be with
us, and the protection and comfort of
the little ones should be of great con
cern to us all. True, we expect to
have a modern building in ths future,
can't tell just exactly when, but the
present need is what should be looked
after. Witba little expense the win
dows could be repaired and a few other
little things done that would make the
building comfortable for the time we
will be forced to use it.
Alamo has handled a lot of cotton
ao far thia season, and the prospects
are that she will handle a lot more.
The young cotton is just beginning to
open and the greater portion of the
crop in Wheeler is the younger growth,
which wou d indicate that we ate yet
to receive the majority of the cotton
crop. Alamo has been handling about
three thousand bales of cotton each
season and will very likely do as well
this season. This does not look like a
very short erop. It is perhaps true
that cotton has been sold here this sea
son that heretofore had been sold at
other points. We have had and still
have plenty of buyers, and they are
paying the highest possible price for
the staple, which makes it worth while
for the farmers to haul it a considerable
distance to this market.

need them made passable. The roads
of the county are in bad shape and it is
hoped the system es working will be
changed so as to give us better public
roads.
