Hdiuess Habils of Americans,
7l i* air acknowledged Inct, with all
classes of foreigners that have visited
this country, that there is no nation on
the face of the earth so restlessly enter
prising ns the American. This is, no
doubt, partially owing to the many av
enues continually opening to the indtis
irious man, and the constantly increas
ing demand for products of every kind.
But il there is no country at the present
time where fortunes are so rapid
ly acquired, there is also none in which
positive success in business is less certain.
It is a strange admission to make, but we
believe the assertion to be strictly true,
that there are more failures in /America
in one year, than there are in the sum
length o| time in the whole continent of
Europe. Something of ibis arises,
doubtless, from the greater number ol
persons in business among ns, in propor
tion to population ; but die main reason
lies in (be dashing manner in which busi
ness is carried on, the loose system of
credit, the slender capital upon w hich a
large amount of business is usually based
and the extravagance and speculative
spirit of the people. The consequence
of this stale of tilings is, that there is so
absolute a dependency placed upon the
facilities usually rendered by Banking
institutions, that immediately a serious
money crisis lakes place, half die busi
ness men of the country are either ruined
utterly, or so serious'y crippled in their
resources, that many years must pass be
fore they can fully recover their fortn< r
position. If iltei* reverses have taught
them to operate iu future with caution
and prudence, it may be a lesson not too
dearly bought alter all. But would it
not have been better to have conducted
business cautiously and pindemly from
the beginning ? A man who plants one
loot firmly in advance, before lie lifts
the other, is in little danger of a fall ;
but lie wl o dashes ahead hurriedly, witli
- out looking before and about him, rutrs a
constant risk not otily of stumbling him
self, but of dragging down others w ith
him.
Spiritual (tappings.
Mr. Nathaniel Randall writes to the
New York Tribune from Woodstocks,
Vermont, concerning the progress of die
, spiritual t appings iu dial State. He is a
i respectable gentleman. He says that
1 these demonstrations were first observed
iu that quarter last summer, when the
‘medium’ was a boy Iront Clermont, N.
Hampshire, who was driven out of town
by n mob who unanimously condemned
die whole pietence as a blasphemous im
, posture and took litis method (on (lie 3 i
t and 4th bl July) to testify their love of
t liberty.
Since then the fiire has kindled and
I spread ; until now there are about fifty
t families in that town whereof one or more
members are ‘mediums,’and die matiifes
tallons have been witnessed from day to
day by the citizens of all classes, wlios>
conclusion is nearly unanimous that the
‘mediums’ are not imposters, whatever
the cause of these singular demonsfra
| tions may be. Many believe them to lie
I caused by the spirits of their deceased
ltietldi*i fi'AZ’-* *nm*i
The fuel- that the ‘manifestations,’
whatever their origin, are extending in
various quarters (says the Tribune)
seems worthy of notice.
