From New Mexico.
Capt. W. E. Love, son-in-law of the
le (in*. Calhoun, arrived at St. Louis,
on lh* 14th accompanied hy 16 persons,
jof whom were Pueblo Indians. The
lodians have been invited to visit Wash-;
Motion City.
Tliey utahe a very respectable appear
ance, speak the Spanish fl enlly, and
some of the present party can read and
write that language eorrectlv. They /
express themselves tptite RStmti.-hed at our \
greatness, although as yet having seen
hut little of the country. * Their surprise
at the first view of a steamboat under
wy, itittl the facility with which it was
managed anil tinned about *|ihr nwqhz,”
as tiny termed it, was freely e\pre,s. and.
One ttf litem since his art i\ ;d at St. Louis

remarked vnluntaiily, Hint “he believed
<sod Aluiitrlitv lived here and that lie did
lint know New Mexico and Pueblo at
all. * They will s* - e many novel sights
during their travel to i-rmmfnt tipon on
their return to their own people.
The party left Sam t Fe in April Inst
and have travelled by slow stages ; of’
course bring no news later respecting
affairs in that quarter than we have al
ready received. Col. Summer is at the
head of the military and civil power, and
fins removed the troops and sent of Gov
ernment further into the interior.
Mr. Johnson, formerly from Pennsyl
vania, who has rest’- a some time in tli.it .
country, and who is with the company,
informs us that the Catnanchcs are en
camped in great numbers for twenty
utiles along the /‘filianSts, in the vicinity
of Fort Arbuekle, and are extremely
irritated at the non arrival of M vjor Fez
patriek with certain presents which have
been promised them. They make their
threats openly, that unless the articles
arrived in agiven time, they would fall
upon the California trains and sweep
them out.
There is blit a small force of infantry
at the fort not at all sufficient -to cope
with the exasperated (.’amain ties, e. Ini
are probably tile most hitter and im
placable foe to the whites .on tin-run*
(incut —and it may he that a mot.! -i t ious
loss ol lile and propelty may hr result
of their disappointment. The com
mander of the troops at the fort informed
Mr. J. dial he intended to strengthen Ills
defences materially, hut doubted bin
ability to resist the savages successfully in
c ase of an attack.
‘SfARCKLY KvER II EAR f) Os PIEUCE.*
The Trenton N. J. Gazette, in the
following anecdote, affords additional
evidence of the world, wide fume! of Gen.
Pierce. Com. Stockton was a promi
nent actor in the Mexican War, and al
though on a diff rent theatre, one would
-oppose ft out his character, democratic
politics anti general intelligence, level cer
tainly made himself familiar with the
• hander and history, of all the “ distin■
inked Generals /” who .figured in that
■war. Hut it seems, according to his own
account, he had scarcely ever heard of
the New Hampshire Bi igadier :
“It is.corn inly reported that when a
committee of democrats at Wnshinpron,
waited on Commodore Stockton, and in
’ ited him to address a meeting to ‘ratify’
the nouiina'ton of Gett. Pierce, he ex
pressed Ins g-eat astonishment that they
♦'hottld ask him to speak in support of
such a mao ns Pierce—a m.m whom he
had scarcely ever heard rtf. He added
that all lie had heard ol him showed that
he entertained a set of principles every
one of which almo-t Cum. Stockton was
opposed It*. He thought it very strange
to be asked to speak in favor of,such a
nomination.
ft?* The Boston Courier, vyjiich rep
resents Mr. Web.it r, and has hulled the
. J
regular nomination in the hopes of gel
ling tip a separate Union party, thus char
acterises its neighbor, the Atlas now stre
nuously topitoniug Scott :
“It is only necessary to leave out o|
the account the masked abnlhiirtii-m of
shat journal, and its whole train of under.
gtound manoeuvres i. to metamorphose
site Whig party into a freesoil party. Is’
r'here a man of any disceriuneiit who does
riot know that for the last two years the
Atlas has been nothing hut a lieesoJ
paper? That everything it has said
atui done, and thought mid imagined, and
.wished and designed, has been of the
JOtost decided abolition, freesoil and anti
gotijjtituiional complexion ? That be
tween the political doctrines of the Adas
and those ot the Boston Cemmoiiireallh
and the New York Tri/ame— those trum
pets, of sedition am! disorganization—you
could not insert the sharpest point of a
pair of metapltysieal scissors ? Is there
a reader of the Atlas who does no 1 know
that tile Atlas, amidst all its hidi*rrim
inale and extravigaot puffery of tin* Bal
timore nomination, has nut said a ward
to indicate its approval of the ft big plat
farm ? Why. indeed, should the Allas
endorse the platform, when it is notum tis
*hal Mc. Seward amt I tip junto, with
whom the Allas has gone hand and glove
in litis business, have no intention who
ever of being bound by it, and that the
leading organ of Gen. Scott in Ne w
York openly avows that it will ‘defy, ex-
I ecrate and spit upon it,’ 1
Quoting this article, the Albany Ar
gus adds the following testimony as re
gards New York :
i “We have yet to see tlie original Scott
Whig paper ill the State, that lias ex- ;
piessi and an approval ofihe Whig platform,
without smne reservation, expressed in
implied, against the compromise plank.
The lending organ of that wiugol the
| party in this Slate, has unequivocally
derided as :m nhsurdilv, the tiualiiv of
any act of Congress—and least of all,
,of the compromise measures. Can nnv
hotly point to any til that cla-s of Whig
p'iiits. in qroiit of New Yutk, that dues
not virtii'dlv execrate the compromise,
and spit upon it.”
Expl'iralifn of the North Pacific. —
A hill na< been reported in the Senate,
providing for the exploration vis the
North Pari fie setts. It is believed that I
these waters are to he tile field of am
immense iiuviga ion. The Park of com
merce w ith China’ lies there. Its waters j
jure we II adapted lor the purposes of steam i
navigation. * It has become necessary, ‘
in Mitlieipulinu of the increase of com
merce on that ocean, that we should lie-
Cv.me belter acquainted w ith it, and that
the track of our ships should he well
marked. A large island was hut lately
discovered in the North Pacifnc hy an I
American whaling ship, and was partly
sailed around. It appeared to he tnlialii.
-ted and fertile. The coasts, shoals,
island, Mtjls, channels and currents. fee.,
of those seas ought to he better kr)owu to
our navigators. Our navy could not be
Wetter employed than in contributing
something to the cause of science and to
the value and safety ol’onr commerce. It
is proposed to semi out only two small
vessel*, witlt officers competent to make
surveys.

An Albany correspondent of the Herufd,
speaking of the magnificent ‘funeral de

We believe that no member of the order
ever stood higher in the estimation of his

known to the fraternity. The Grand
