Washington, Adjust G.
The Senate have undertaken, at this
late stage oftlie session, to proh* the cor
ruptions o( Congress arid ol Government ;
and have, at the instance ol Gen. I Imiston,
appointed a Select eoniinittee of live to
■ inquire into all the lads respening the
, prosecution of measures before Congress,
and of claims before boards ol commis
sion in the departments, by means of
bribery and fraud. The committee is a
very efficient one, to wit : Messrs Hous
ton, Borland, Meriwether, Brooke and
Underwood. These are all vigilant guar
dians of the public treasury, and thier
object is no doubt to look to its coffers
before any moi eis stolen. Though the
inquiry is very general, yet it is probable
that the chief subject of investigation will
relate to transactions with Congress.
The object is also, no doubt, to discour
age the establishment of any more boards
of commission.
Mr. Bennett’s General Land Bill was
reported to-day, but with the recommen
dation that it do not pass. An amend
ment was then moved, which is weli cal
culated to remove many oftlie objections
to the bill, by designating the several rail
roads, lor the construction of which the
land granted to such qew State shall be
applied. Should this amendment be
adopted, it will secure to the new States
a very desirable sv stein of com
munication; instead of leaving it to the
Stale’s legislature to scramble for and
squander the fund.
The Senate passed oven lie- private
calendar 10-d.iv, and will scarcejv resume
it this session. They have passed many
private bills ur this session, will
probably be acted uppfi Jay the. House.
The policy oftlie De#b'y rtrifiHtry will
now’ be yer\ soon disclosed. 1 1 w ill, so
far ns rye are concerned, lie a’ return to
the old colonial policy of restr ievion,
and sTregloratibit of-the corn laws; .and
the expolsjoq of the people oftlie United
Slates from the fisheries.
