Ti e entrancing interest and delight
tnl perils of a midwinter j umey
thn the heart of Atiatc
are described in the New /oik Gtapb

owing to the tardiness of winter’s icy

eiinbuig. A sledge, iu le and clumsy,
bad been packed with deerskins, sheep
skies, turlined mittens, dogskin socks,
camel hair stockings, felt boota and
aeqnisites for keeping the cold ont.
The tourists sretohed themselves out
ou these com'orteis, while yensbitks
or drivers curled themselves up on the
comfortless box seat aud the start was
made. The posting sys em of Siberia
is wonderful. All across the conti

between all important towns, at dis
tances ▼arying from eight to twenty
miles, are post e a ions, wiero, on pre
sentation of his pass, the traveler can
demand the use of his journey. If
horses are not forthcoming the travel
er can live, boaid free, at the station
until the animals come.
The :Oad is inaiked out by small
tree branches aud 1 undieds of

The thermometer fell lower every day
un'il it registed 62 degrees. On wsk
ing in the morning the ice over the
eyes had to be thawed out with the
lingers before they could be opened
In this way an average of over 150
miles a day was made. Iu nine weeks
from Yladwostok Ekaterinburg was
reached. It cost Ureu, oue of the
travelers, his life, the journey having
sown the seeds of consumption which
he survived only a few months.

The keeper of Edward Deacons, t e

second shook the life out of the rat.

and sitting down on a bedstead e r ied
like a child. During his entire trial and
when sentenced he never manifested a
partiole of emotion.
Some of the Ingredients of Snuff.
In the manufacture of snuff in this
country, the fines* Virginia leaf tobao
co is used, which is considerably modi
fied by carrying the fermentation much
f.r her h m is tobiceo intended frr
smoking, and is simply ground and
sifted.
“In our factory,” said a New Yoik
dialer to a Mail and Express reporter,
“we have about sixty mills, resembling
large coffee mills. The ground tobao
oo falU upon an endless band of bio id
canvas, which convoys it to fonr sets
of mechanical s'eves. The snuff whioh
passes through is reoe.ived upon an
endless traveling band, which carries
it thonce into a clote chest. The pa -
roles which are too coa:se to pass
through the sieve are r< ground. The
immense yarieties of snuffs are formed
by mixing together and grinding to*
baccos of different gro tbs,and by va
rying tbs lature of the same.
"For tbe snuff known as Noaroco,
forty parts of genuine S . Outer, South
American, tobacco, forty parts of Geor

I am at a loss to kuow whether hs is
a democrat from pr ; no:ple or just the

called them democrat,) but tny way
Democrat’s judgment is weak. Who
could suppose for a moment that i<

say there is no combination bitwsea
Saddath and myself, nor anyone els<-
to defeat Coggins or the democratic
party, bat mr.st confess that the con
cern that was held as a convention,
was a fraud and a reproai h on tbe
principles of democracy. Democracy
is the people, democracy means a gov
ernment in the hands of the people,
aud the people should be oorsulted on
all occasions like this that of selec*-
ing a public servant, when the
interest of the state is in danger, to
stand and battlo for the right of the
poor man, who wield the implements
of husbandry and he who handles the
yard stick and the incorporation and
