LOCAL ITEiVIS7~
It was amusing to note the
vvi re-work in gs yes terda y.
Mr. T. J. Ash and his sister Miss
Sallie of Athens, visited their lath
er’s family last week.
The Observer is a little late this
week, having to wait for the elec
tion returns.
Miss Ida Clarke from near Har
mony Grove visiled relatives and
friends here last week.
Miss Owen of this county, visit
ed relatives and friends hero last
week.
Miss Emma Martin paid the fam
ily of Hr. Lockhart a flying visit
during the holidays.
Mr. Boykin, connected with the
Rankin Feather Renovator, was
quite sick last week.
Miss Hecie Stephens spent the
holidays with relatives and friends
in U annony Grove.
Yesterday presented a lively
turnout to the election, though the
day was not a pleasant one.
Rev. M.\ Ivnie ana Liu family have
rawed to their now quartets at the
Me hodirit pars.mage.
The “Oh, bo-joyful, John An
derson, my Jo, John Barley-corn,”
didn’t cut much of a figure here
hut week.
The weather has been mild and
pleasant the past week—much to
lhe pleasure of visitors during the
holidays.
The old year has passed out and
the new one has come in. Thus
’Squire 18S8 goes out and Major
ISS9 comes in, not to stay, but to
keep a “guine!”
The election is over and things
will settle down to the usual quiet
itude—though some that used to
speak, now pass and repass with
out recognition.
The town creek this side of Mr.
Waters is badly in need of a cross
ing, foot-log or something to walk
on, It is impossible to cross as it
is without getting mired in water
and mud.

The installation ceremonies of

The Bushville Literary Club.
The entertainment given by the
Bushville Literary Society on last
Saturday evening, was a success.
The exorcises consisted of several
charming recitations by young la
dies. That of The Polish Boy, by
Miss Dorough, captivated the au
dience.
I)r. Lockhart's speech, on The
Old South and the New wasreceiv
ed with marked attention and en
thusiasm. Messrs. Abrams, Cart
ledge and Atkins, of the Columbia
Theological Seminary, made appro
priate and interesting addressess.
The exercises were enlivened by
excellent music by the Bushville
band, Tho audience which was
very large and attentive, dispersed
about 10 o’clock.

Miss Ella Gary, tho teacher of pen

Holley Springs, near hero.
The revenue men wore iu to see the
boys a few days ag®, but could not

The eburcir at Nails Greek has been

j Muysviile, Dec. 20, I*BB.—Rev.
R. I). Hawkins preached a very iu
teresting sermon at the Presbyte
rian church in this place last Mon
day night. Mr. Hawkins is a tine
preacher, and always finds a host
of friends here. The citizens were
delighted with the‘-Fantastic rdo*’
that look place here yesterday
morning. The Union Christmas
tree at the Baptist church yester
day evening was quilo nice; and
all who were present seemed to en
joy themselves very much. There
was quite a large crowd at the so
ciable at Mr. Wm McDonald's
last Monday night. Misses Mary
Mintz and The© Chandler of
Grove Level, and Misses Annie
and Mamie Cartledge of Bushville,
are spending a few days with rela
tives and friends here.
The party at Mr, Robt. Halo’s last
night was quite a success Mr. J.
Iv Thompson, a prominent farmer
ot Banks, was in town yesterday.
Mr Cager Arter, a fine young man
of Apple Valley, is spending a few
days here this week —There was a
serious accident occurred here last
Monday evening: While the sec
tion hands were going up the rail
road a negro fell olfiu front of the
hand-car, and was run over and
killed —Misses Ida and Cora Hale,
two charming belles of Ibis place,
left on the train for Harmony
Grove this morning, where they
will spend tho remaining holidays
with friends and relatives —Miss
Cora McDonald of this place, is
visiting relatives and friends in

Christinas has come and gone,
but not without leaving in metno
rie’s store a good deal of pleasure,
to be put on the shelf with the
things that were.
The hoppers were numerous
(not the grass-hoppers) but the
dancers. The epidemic was con
tagious, and great was its influence,
many tailing in the embrace ofils
charms—be they good or evil.
Tho first was at Mr. J. E Steph
ens, the second at Judge Hill's,
the third at Mr. J. J. Hill's, tho
fourth at Dr, Hayden's, the fifth at
Judge Hill's,
It would be superfluous to say
the gathering at these places were
large. Every one knows Homer
and her surrounding section can
turn out as gallant a number of
young men and young ladies as
any other section in northeast
Georgia.
Messrs. Stephens, Hills and
Hayden have the thanks of the at
tendants for their kindness in ten
dering the use of their homes for
such occasions. May they live to
see many more Christinas, and bs
able to extend such pleasures t>
the young!
A good deal of whbLey war drank
