ROBBERS “TAP" THE COIN.
Hidden Gold of Two Women Secured
By Bold Thieves.
A most shame f ul robbery occurred
at Barnett, Ga., Monday morning just
before daylight. Two old ladies, maid
en sisters, whose .ages will average
seventy years, the’ Misses Battle, re
side in a cottage by, themselves, which
they have occupied .for nearly twenty
five years. Between midnight and day
Monday morning three men, one
white and two colored, forced their
front door open and as the women
got out of their bed they were cov
ered with a pistol and cureed and copi
manded not to speak.
One was pushed on the floor and or
dered to lay there while the other was
given a severe choking.
The robbers then iearched the houBe
carefully and succeeded in finding sev
eral thousand dollars. Four hundred
of it was in twenty-dollar gold pieces
which they had received nearly fifty
years ago. The robbers also carried
off about $10,000 worth of Georgia
railroad stock and John P. King Fac
tory stock, together with deeds to
land, etc. •W
It has been generally known for
many years that the Misses Battle
kept a large sum of money In their
house and have been warned of their
danger many times and advised to in
vest it, but they never had invested a
dollar and did not consider it safe out
of their possession. What investments
they had were inherited.
This is the fourth attempt to secure
this money, but the robbers never suc
ceeded before in entering their bed
room. The first time they secured
$140.
A reward of $500 has been offered
for the apprehension of the parties.

BLOCKADE CONTEMPLATED.
Germany Decides on Plan to Force
Venezuela to Terms.
A Washington special says: The
gathering of German warships in the
vicinity of Venezuela, and the pres
ence in the same locality of many
American, British, French and other
foreign warships, is directing, atten
tion to the Imminence of the naval de
monstration Germany is about to make
against Venezuela.
It is said to be probable that the
first move by Germany will be the es
tablishment of a blockade of Venezue
lan ports so as to prevent the introduc
tion of food products into Venezuela,
and thus starve the besieged into sub
mission. Venezuela, it is said, is en
tirely dependent on the outside world
for its supply of corn, which is a sta
ple among the Venezuelans. The Ger
mans are expected to occupy one or
more of the main ports of Venezuela,
probably La Guayra and Maracaibo. In
this connection most positive assur
ances have been given to the United
States government that the occupation
Is to be temporary and only for such
length of time as will permit the col
lection of the debt due Germany, thus
disposing of the report that there is
any ulterior purpose to establish a
German coaling station on Venezuelan
soil.
