March 29 I have just received at my v iauru Uni mail the lull stenographic re port of Mr. Hardwick’s Thomson speech, ftnd stenographic; reportot that portion of his Appling speech which was in reply t<> my “inter view 1 * o£ March 22—my previous knowledge _ being derived from newspaper prints. In that "interview 11 T made two ■charges against Mr. Hardwick, ■one for falsifying the ldomocratie platf orm of 1884, and the other for falsifying the Record, He said that the words “dens ive laughter” were contained in the “Record” as coining from my Democratic colleagues in tiuii with remarks of mine. vded this and said the Record tlie R,. mi biicam>, and I gave date and page of the Record where they occurred, to-wit: Feb. 19, on page 2040. J. further said that Hits was the 0,1 *.V place m the Record thus:; Words “derisive occurred in connection with speech of mine. In this latter statement 1 was in crroi. Had I been in possession of the steno graphic report of Mr. Hardwick’s speech, now at hand, 1 could not imwmade Hint mistake of saying that that was the only On another date, and on a dif feivnt page, to wit. Jan. 22, 1902, page 837, the words “demnv 1 a ugh ter “ do ocmr as coining fIom Democrats. I made what; 1 considered dilligent search , but did not gee these wolds on that page, nor had I any recollection of ever having seen them in connec tion with that debate. My fail ure to find them may lie partly ae counted for by the fact that from tin* time I came to Congress up to tho ciatG of my interview, tho Gon* gWsioual Record embraces by nc trial count, more than 25,000 printed pages, On this point there is, of course, no issue of ve racity uh to nuj, Mv statement. wns clearly an unintentional error of oigtistiioii. I may make mistaken like other men, lull I never falsi fy 1 frvety admit my ovrrsigin, and now withdraw that particular charge and tender the umvml* honorable full and-complete to Mr ilurdwidk. My conscience com* pels this'course. 1 would not willniglv wrong any man. HuX the necessity is now* glMAt* er than ever for Mr. Hardwick to answer that other charge of Hav ing faJoiiied the Democratic plat form of ‘84 to suit 1 jj-* neecssi tieB and views of rotation in office ■ The charge was that he struck out certain words from that platform inserted in their stead other words h)l lllB OW ! 1 lll(>i*G hllillibif, to Ilia own purposes, i Ins charge I sus tamed by p »BltlV 0 0 VI(ieilCU that w as conclusive ill Illy published L lf?jh)Illd<’r . to II ill I * Jmmr-dialely uiion tlie making ot that eliKiyo by me, lie cut short our newspaper discussion in a published interview, but this in terview contained no denial of the charge. Roth the charges which I made against Mr. Hardwick were of the same nature, and Ihe falsification of the Democratic platform which he has not denied, is equally as heinous as the one which he has disproved and uliicli I have with drawn, and for which I have ten dered honorable amends. At Appling Mr. Hardwick said if my charges were true, (and of course this applies to both of them) I 10 “would not lie entitled to the respect of anv honest man or woman. ” I now call on linn to exculpate himself if possible, from the charge ot having falsified the Democrat ic platform of 1884 as al lodged. If he will do that I will prom ply withdraw my charge and make every amend that an honorable man can make to another funder similar circumstances. If he fails hi8 own words above quoted must face him . . I have made no-'attack on Mr. Hardwick of a personal nature, (except Oil facts appearing on f-.o:> of the pap°r3 ns written bv himself.
