FIVE FEARED LOST
IN BOAT COLLISION
FREIGHTER RAMS FISHING
BOAT; ONE KILLED
INSTANTLY
SHEEPSHEAD BAY. May 6 (TP)
—The fear that five fishermen died
when a freighter nosed through a
thick fog to cut down a small excur
sion fishing boat grew steadily to
day.
The boat, run down by the freight
er, “Angelina" was the “M. J. R.,
VIII”. One fisherman was killed in
stantly in the crash, but It had been
.supposed htat all other passengers
aboard the firshing boat were res
cued by nearby vessels. A check-up,
however, revealed that four other pas
sengers are still missing and are be
lieved to have drowned.
Federal Steamboat Inspection Ser
vice hearings into the crash will be
resumed today. The skipper of the
“M. J. R., VIII”, Capt. Frank Pola
check, was the principal witness at
the opening hearing. He said that the
dense fog shut down after the fish
ing boat had anchored in the steamer
lanes.
