APPEAL MADE TO
SPARE BIRDS LIFE
SHOOT WITH CAMERAS
ONLY PLEADS GOVERN
MENT GROUP
WASHINGTON. May 12 (TP).—
The biological survey is asking the
• ■nation today to shoot birds with cam
eras, if it feels the urge to shoot
them at all.
The reason given by the govern
ment wild life conservation depart
ment was th t the population of birds
especially rare ones, in the United
States is decreasing.
A special appeal was made for the
Red Crested Woodpecker. Because
this bird is big, noisy and conspicu
ous. it has become an easy target for
guns and sling-shots. Then the de
partment went on to debunk the gen
erally accepted idea that the wood
pecker harms live trees.
“Nothnig of the sort,” says the sur
vey. “He does most of his chopping
on dead trees. Digging deep, he ex
tracts and devours thousands of in
sect enemies of plant life.’’
the women listeners, “intelligent sub
stantial news programs of interest tc
women.”
8.8. C. heads invited the women
to a conference .From the sugges
tions advanced by women from aJ!
walks of life and all parts of the
British empire, hte new programs
were planned. From now on, says Sir
Stephen Tallent*, the 8.8. C. pub
lic relations director, there’ll be few
er recipes and more women's news.

Gas attack on ants
Ants are objectionable in the lawr

termite control. The overall dimensions of this house are 37 by 59
feet. No plaster is used on interior walls and ceilings, all being
covered with pine boards—shiplap, V-jointed or molded-joint-—or
panels, the natural finish of the wood being used. J
Small rock plants are often buriec
by ant hills, and even the stones
themselves ar. apt ot become loosen
ed a d dislodged by the activ. sos

One method of control is to poui
boiling w*ter into the ants’ nest, bu J
a more effective method is a gas at
tack, as follow*:
Fig. 1. With a pointed stick or
broom handle, poke a hole three
inches deep in the top center of th.
ant hill. Into this hole pour a table
spoonful of carbon bisulphide. Upon
contact with the moist earth thi:
liquid forms a deadly gas which pan
etrates all the passageways of the
hill and quickly kills the ants.
Fig. 2. Immediately upon pouring
the carbon bisulphide intj the ants'
nest, cover the hole with damp news
papers. To hold the damp newspa
p:rs in place throw a burlap ovei
the ant hill.
Carbon bisulphide can be obtained
at any sed or drug store. It should
be handled carefully according to di
rections ..n label.

WAGE AMENDMENT
ON RELIEF MEASURE
BELIEVED FAVORED
SENATE APPROVAL EX
PECTED WHEN UPPER
HOUSE VOTES
WASHINGTON, May 12 (TF>—-A
prevailing wage amendment, tacked
onto the $1,425,000,000 relief appropri
ation bill before the measure passed
the House, is expected to get the ap
proval of the Senate when the upper
chamber votes cm the measure.
The Senate last year defeated a
similar amendment, calling for the
payment of WPA wages to equal the
prevailing wage paid in the various
sections tfhere the WPA projects are
under way. However, the present
amendment Is understood to have
White House approval and is expected
to be given the Senate’s okay.
Capitol Hill prophets were free to
predict that the relief approriation
bill will pas the senate in much the
same form that it was sent through
the House by a 341 to 38 vote. Debate
in the upper chamber, however, prob
ably will bring an attack on the en
tire WPA set-up .from West Virginia’s
Senator Holt. Holt recently accused
WPA heads of using relief fluids for
political purposes.
