MOB ACTION BY SECT HAS
POLICE PUZZLED
HOLLYWOOD, June 3 (TP)—Au
thorities admit they are stumped to
day in their investigation of the rea
son for mob action which drove form
er screen star William Haines out of
Manhattan Beach.
The near-rio, in which Haines and
* friend, Jimmy Shields, were badly
beaten, occured Sunday night, but
news of the incident did not leak out
until hours later.
According to Haines, who left the
screen several years ago to take up
interior decorating, he and Shields
were driving towards the Manhattan
beach cottage he had recently rented
when they were stoppd by a mob.
Naming themselves the "White Leg
ion", Haines said, the mobsters beat
him and Shields unmercifully and
then ordered them out of the com
munity.
Several guests at Haines’ cottage
also were Included in the "Get Out”
order. Their cars were pelted with de
crepit eggs and aged tomatoes as they
fled. Haines Insists that he knows no
reason for the attack.
