Owen Rushing and his wife, Murcia (above), are shown in the Detroit;

POLITICIANS NO
FARM SOLUTION
SOUTH BEND. Ind., June 3 (TP).
The president of the American Chem
ical Foundation, Francis Garvan, de
clared today that politics can never
solve America’s agricultural problem.
Garvan spoke at Notre Dame uni
versity. His speech was a part of
the ceremonies at the laying of a
cornerstone for the biological re
search building.
Said Garvan —“The answer to the
farm product surplus is not going to ,
be s olved by politicians. New uses
for crops and products must be found
and that is a job for scientists—not
politicians.”
DELEGATION PROTESTS
ALIEN’S DEPORTATION
NEW YORK. June 6 (TP)—The
Brazilian general consul received a
' delegation today which came to pro-
I test the deportation of Arthur Ewert,
| former reichstag deputy, to Nazi Ger
! many.
Ewerb and his. wife fled Germany ’
when Hitler rose to power. They !
sought refuge in Brazil. They were '
arrested by the Vargas government in
November, and they have been im- I
prisoned ever since. The delegation !
which called on Consul Luis De Faro
today came from Liberal organiza
tions bent on freedom for political
prisoners and opposed to war and
Fascism. The group urged vigorously
that the Ewerts be permitted to leave
Brazil for a country of their own
choice.
As Jowett, a famed master of Ball
iol college (England) lay dying, num
erous relatives assembled and hung
around the residence until they got
on Jowett’s nerves. One evening he
sent down a message by his butler:
Tell them all to go to bed. I shall
not do anything definite tonight.”
An invitation to dinner from some
one who hadn’t heard the news,
reached Jowett’s residence sometime
later. The butler answered it form
ally: “Mr. Jowett regrets he will be
unable to dine on Thursday, as he
is dead.”
