The I*le of Wonder*.
In Lake Maggiore lie the islands belonging
to the Borromean family, among which is
“Isola Bella,” an enchanted ground well
worthy of its name. Two hundred years ago
the island was a barren rock ; to-day, thanks
to the freak of a spendthrift nobleman, it isJJ“a
joy for ever.” Ten terraces built in massive
stone piers, rise out of tlie water, earth of suffi
cient depth to grow the largest trees was
brought there, and these many years it has
been a little forest of luxurious vegetation for
every elime. There flourish the camphor and
the India-rubber trees, the bread fruit and tiie
banana, the black bamboo and the American
aloe, the cedar of Lebanon, the magnolia, the
date-palm, laden with fruit, and camel! is fif
teen feet high. Every step brings one into
contact with new beauties, while statues and
wondrous works in stone mingle everywhere
with the living green ivies, honey suckles,
trumpet-creepers, and a wealth of ferns and
creeping plants.
Rev. J. Vila Blake, author of “Old Eng
lish Folk Songs,” in the February Atlantic of
last year, writes of “Some Beautiful Old Ca
rols.” lie goes back to the fourteenth century
and gives us the origin of the pretty custom as
well as the word itself. lie says :
“Brand mentions a strange derivation for the
word carol. ‘lt comes, they say, from canton,
to sing, and ro£i, which is an interjection of
joy; for in ancient times the burden of the
song, when men were merry, was rota, rota.’
Better than this ingenious fancy, however, is
the reference directly to the domestic dance in
old England, called ‘carolc.’ Thence carolc
became a name for a dance in general, and so,
also, for the tune to which it was performed ;
thence it was applied to any merry tune, and
so to festival songs.”

SEALS.
To our Subordinate Granges: As it is impos
sible for you to comply with the requirements of
our Organization without seals, it behooves you
to purchase them as early as possible. There are
comparatively few Granges which have seals.
Having tried divers manufacturers, we have
ascertained that O. H. Kelley, Secretary, Wash
ington, I). C., can forward seals more promptly,
and with greater uniformity in design, than either
of them. His terms are from $4 to $7, depen
dent upon amount of device within the inner
circle. In ordering give county, name, when or
ganized, numberof Grange, and Express office to
which the seal is to be shipped.
Fraternally,

Georgia State Grange.
Secretary’s Office, 1
Colaparchee, Ga., Dec. 17, 1873. j
To Masters of Subordinate Granges—Greeting-.
By resolution of Mass Convention held in the
city of Atlanta. November 25th, 1873, the Master
of Georgia State Grange was requested to ascer
tain from every subordinate Grange how far each
would sanction and execute the policy recom
mended by said Convention, in “ sowing down
to small grain one-third of tillable area of farms,
planting one-third in corn, and remaining third
in cotton." This circular, therefore, is to invite
an expression of opinion and determination in
said respect, from each local Grange. You are,
therefore, most urgently requested to lay the
matter before your Grange at its next meeting,
and endeavor to secure the approval thereof of
the policy indicated in action of said Convention,
and inform W. M., T. J. Smith, Oconee, C. R. IL.
Ga., of your decision. It is proposed in the
premises to secure a concert of action and co
operation between every Cotton States Grange.
and we most cordially invite brother farmers, who
are not memtars of our Order, to adopt this, the
only policy which seems to promise to make our
farms self-sustaining, and bestow upon us and
our loved ones immunity from the bondage of
debt and distress. Fraternally.
