Postal Telegraph.
Mr. Eugene Lawrence, who is now writing
to Harper's Weekly, from Europe, has this to
say of the English postal telegraph : As the
sole manager of the telegraph, the post office
has proved singularly successful. The Gov
ernment purchased the lines at an extrava
gant rate, and was misled by.the owners as to
the amount of the returns. Yet with all the
disadvantages of an imprudent bargain, the
new system promises to be profitable as well
as uesful. For a small sum that does not vary
with the distance, a message may be sent to
any part of the kingdom; it may be dropped in
a letter box or left at a postal station. The
uniformity of the rate, like that of postage.bas
proved a strong attraction. The messages,
according to the last post office report, have
increased to fifteen thousand, or at the rate
of three thousand yearly. Unusual accuracy
is obtained. The press is enlarging its use of
the wires with extraordinary rapidity. The
telegraph is rapidly becoming a constant
mode of communication for all classes, and
the avarice of stockholders, or the extrava
gance of directors, no longer impedes the
intercourse of Englishmen. Tiie charges
will no doubt be gradually reduced, and tele
graphic communication be made about as
cheap as postal. Nor can it be long before
our own Government will be obliged,to adopt
the popular system and enable its people to
converse with each other at any distai.ee at
moderate rates, unrestrained by the exactions
of private monopolies; and the still wider
prospect of an international telegraph is sug
gested that may spread cheap thought over
the habitable globe.

SEALS.
To our Subordinate Granges: As it is impos
sible for you to comply with the requirements of
our Organization without seals, it behooves yon
to purchase them as early as possible. There are
comparatively few Granges which have seals.
Having tried divers manufacturers, we have
ascertained that O. H. Kelley, Secretary, Wash
ington, D. C., can forward seals more promptly,
and with greater uniformity in design, than either
of them. His terms are from $4 to $7, depen
dent upon amount of device within the inner
circle. In ordering give county, name, when or
ganized, numberof Grange, and Express office to
which the seal is to bo shipped.

Secretary’s Office, )
Colaparchee, Ga., Dec. 17, 1873. J
To Masters of Subordinate Granges—Greeting:
By resolution of Muss Convention held in the
city of Atlanta, November 25th, 1873, the Master
of Georgia State Grange was requested to ascer
tain from every subordinate Grange how far each
would sanction and execute the policy recom
mended by said Convention, in “ sowing down
to small grain one-third of tillable area of farms,
planting one-third in corn, and remaining third
in cotton.” This circular, therefore, is to invite
an expression of opinion and determination in
said respect, from each local Grange. You are,
therefore, most urgently requested to lay the
matter before your Grange at its next meeting,
and endeavor to secure the approval thereof of
the policy indicated in action of said Convention,
and inform W. M., T. J. Smith, Oconee, C. R. R.,
Ga., of your decision. It is proposed in the
premises to secure a concert of action and co
operation between every Cotton States Grange,
and we most cordially invite brother farmers, who
are not members of our Order, to adopt this, the
only policy which seems to promise to make our
farms self-sustaining, and bestow upon us and
our loved ones immunity from the bondage of
debt and distress. Fraternally,
dee2s E. TAYLOR, Secy.

THE GEORGIA GRANGE.
BiisineNH Prospects of the Farmer.
It must be exceedingly gratifying to the
true friends of the farmers, to witness the
alacrity with which they are organizing new
Granges. Since the first attempt at organiza
tion among the farmers, our ears have been
fwored with expressions of doubt on the
part of middlemen, as to the capability
of farmers to attend to any business outside
of that of following the plow or the gather
ing of their crops. They have told us how
honest farmers would come to them to pur
chase a reaper or mower, or some other agri
cultural implement, for a farmers’ club, and
want live or ten per cent, of the price act
ually paid for the machine, to put in their
own pockets, and request that the bill be
made out in full. We believe all honorable
dealers have invariably refused to sell goods
to these fe’lows. As a general rule, the man
who is so anxious to benefit his fellows by
purchasing for them, is the very last one
that should be selected.
Agriculture is being organized on a busi
ne-s basis, and will in a short time be fully
able to compete with other business organi
zations. The farmers have put their hands
to this new plow’, which is daily plowing
deeper and deeper into the field of progress,
and they do not intend to look back, but
plow a clean straight furrow to the point for
which they set out. They are determined to
do this ; to cut down their expenses in every
possible direction—exeept that of gaining
information that will advance their social
and business interests. The farmers are a
unit on this subject. They are rapidly learn
ing to do business in a business way, and are
co-operating and aiding each other more than
ever heretofore in the way offsecuring better
prices, by not being compelled to rush their
crops into market when a price lower than
the actual cost of production is offered. A
great change for the better is in progress, and
as all great bodies, and great reforms move
slowly at first, we trust that all will patiently
await the good time coming—which we are
confident is near at hand, — Hural World.
Why Newspaper Articles are Not Signed.
The impersonality of a paper like the
London Times undoubtedly gives effect
to its leaders, to say nothing of that
majestic tone which is the key-note of
the establishment. Thus, if, after
reading one of those leaders on State
questions, in which the writer takes his
survey from an elevation equal to that
of the Premier of the nation, the dis
covery were made that the author was
John Smith, a Bohemian of uncertain
resources and character, the article
would lose much of its prestige. In
one ease it is the individual opinion of
John Smith, an English Giboyer, in
the other it is the majestic and prudent
judgment of a tribunal. John Smith,
in silence and obscurity, passes his life
in furnishing opinions worthy of Glad
stone, the institution which he helps to
maintain absorbing his personality, and
sometimes drawing upon his vitality
unto deaths for this journalistic Jug
gernaut does sometimes crush those
who devote their lives to its construc
tion. This makes John Smith’s pro
fession the most ungrateful of all.
This is remedied in the French sys
tem of signing everything that goes
into the journal, and thus each man is
judged by the public according to his
work. In this way sometimes an
honorable reputation in literature is
made with a dozen brilliant articles.
In the London Times establishment,
with the secrecy with which authorship
is surrounded, the same articles might
be written during a score of years with
out knowledge of the author on the
part of the public. In the French press
there is responsibility in addition to
publicity, each writer being held ac
countable before the law and the public
for everything he writes. This, with
the reprehensible practice of duelling
which exists in France, is the reverse
of the medal, for there is hardly an
editor in Paris who has not been shot
at, or has not crossed swords on account
of his journalistic work. The result is
that the journalist usually carries his
sword behind his pen. These com
bats generally arise from trivial causes,
and occasionally the life of some man
of rare talent is sacrificed through the
truculency of some unknown man whom
the w’orld might spare without loss. —

The Smallest Postoflice.
"Now, where do you suppose the
smallest postoffice is,” asked Uncle
Clarence, one evening, as he laid down
a magazine he had been reading.
"Away off in Colorado or Montana,
or some of those new sections of the
country,” answered Lewis.
"There are som? pretty small ones
there, no doubt; but the one I refer to,
beats them all. for littleness. It is kept
in a barrel.”
All the children laughed, and practi
cal Jenny remarked, "I should not
think there would be much room for the
postmaster to turn around.”
"It has no postmaster,” said Uncle
Clarence, "it keeps itself.”
Curiosity was now wide awake, to
know all about this wonderful post
office.
"It is situated, or rather hung, on
the outermost rock of the mountains,
overhanging the Straits of Magellan,
opposite Terra del Fuego. Every pass
ing ship opens it to place letters in, or
to take them out. Every ship under
takes to forward all letters in it, that it
is possible for them to transmit. How
many homes have been made bright by
these messages, left in the barrel post
office. Tt hangs there by its iron chain,
beaten and battered by the winds and
storms, but no locked and barred office
on land is more secure. It is not in
the track of mail robbers.”
The back balance of the National j
Grange is between s4o,o(X*and $-:>0,000. i

Secn-t.irie« noting az<p errors or omissions in spelling names, or in any post-offices, or names of Granges,
etc., will confer a favor upon the Secretary of State Grange by promptly notifying him ofthe fact. It is al
most im[<os-:ible, from an infinite variety of penmanships in an infinite variety of returns, not to commit
mistakes.
The Rev. Celia Burleigh says of the
prevailing style of feminine attire:
" Woman was originally created a
Liped. And the creator doubtless
intended her to remain a biped ; but
at present, thanks to her swinging,
trailing, cumbrous dress, woman is
forced to make use of her bands in
locomoting through any narrow pas
sage-wav, up or down stairs, and is
so virtually reduced to a quadruped.”
LIST OF GRANGES— Continued.
There is a sect in England called the
“Peculiar People,” one of whose tenets
seems to be the refusal of medical rem- j
edies in case of sickness. One of them ,
recently died from erysipelas. When
taken sick, she would not call a physi- J
ci an, saving she preferred to trust to r"
the Lord. The coroner’s jury expressed Jr
regret that there was no way of punish- Jjj
ing this criminal neglect.
