TWENTY YEARS AHEAD.
At a social on May avenue the age
of Mrs. Peterby was discussed by sev
eral friends. “She says she is only
thirty,” giggled Mrs. Cox, who is a
friend of Mrs. Peterby. “Then, she is
the most remarkable woman that ever
lived,” said old Judge Brown.
“How so, Judge?” asked Mrs Cox.
“Because, if she is only thirty years
old, she went to school with me in old
Virgi’ny twenty years before she was
born.”
The young lady was twenty years
ahead of her social sisters of the same
age.
So it is with the go-ahead shoe
house of C. J. ROONEY & CO. They
are in every sense twenty years ahead
of all competitors.
In they first place they buy every
dollars worth of goods direct from the
manufacturers, and thereby save 15
to 25 per cent., which is usually paid
by other houses to salesmen or agents
who represent these manufacturers.
Mr. Roonej’ goes up to Boston and
the eastern markets, right into the
factories, and with cash in hand buys
goods at 5 per cent, above the cost of
manufacture, and thereby saves cus
tomers the enormous per centage paid
by other houses to the agents of man
ufacturers, who, of course, do not
work for nothing.
The following letters from head
quarters will suffice :
Mb. James, Credit Bureau,
Boston, Mass.
Sir—ln answer to your enquiry re
garding the standing of C. J.ROONEY
& CO., of Augusta, Ga., we would say
they always pay us spot cash, buy
goods at our lowest figures and dis
count every bill. Their discounts, we
think will pay their expenses, and they
have the reputation of selling the best
goods at a lower price than any house
in Augusta.
Their enormous sales seem to estab
lish the truth of the report, as they
sell as many goods as all the other
shoe houses in Augusta combined.
Yours, very respectfully,
SAMUEL GEORGE,
And numberless other manufactu
turers.
This letter is sufficient to convince
our numberless patrons of the advan
tages we can offer.
REMARKABLE PROGRESS
Two Augusta editors met a few days
since, when the following ensued :
Mr. A —l see the smaller shoe houses
are trying hard to keep their trade
from C. J. ROONEY & CO., where
low prices and goods are attracting
every, body. I never saw a firm rise
so rapidly and handle such a heavy
business in so short a time.
Mr. B—Yes, good goods and low
prices will always lead, coupled with
energy and the most polite attention
The smallest child or the most lowly
person in the land will be treated as
kindly or sold as cheap as President
Cleveland himself, and this is the se
cret of their success.
Mr. A.—Yes, and they carry a stock
to please everybody. They make a
specialty of fine shoes and hats for
ladies, gents and children.
Their hand made French and Eng
liah kid, and imported pebbled goat
boots for ladies are the finest I ever
saw, while their hand made shoes in
in French and American calf, kanga
roo, porpoise and other skins, ex
cels anything I ever seen.
Their maroon, chocolate, black,
brown and canary, alpine and stiff
hats are beyond description.
Mr. B—But you must not forget
their stock of fine trunks and umbrel
las. They carry a heavy stock of both
but their trunks made to their own
order, and their silk, gold mounted
umbrellas, are the very thing for the
Christmas holiday*

NOT HIS FAULT.
Two rival young ladies met off :
Broad street, a few days since, when
the conversation was overheard. v
Miss Eva—So, Mr. Bloomer called
on you night before last ?
Miss Minnis —Yes, he is delightful,
but stayed so late.
Miss Eva—Yes, he told me it was.,
12 o’clock before he could get away.
Girls, don’t trifle with the boys’ af
fections and give all your time to'
flirting, but settle on practical affairs. •
Call around and see the immense ♦
stock of Shoes, Trunks and UmbreFi’ ■
las at C. J. ROONEY & COS., and

fault.

CAPABLE MAN.
A
Smith —Do you know a man named •_#
Tom Brown ? He wants a position in %
my office as cashier. Is he capable ? »
Jones—Well, I should say so. He -?
is capable of doing anything. He was
Private Secretary for a New York Al- ,
derm an for several years. He is capa- #
ble of doing anything. So it is with ,
the Leading Shoe House of C. J. .
ROONEY & CO., in the sense that '
they are capable to furnish Ladies,
Gents and Children with the best |
Shoes and Hats in the world, and for
the least money. Don’t forget to call
on C. J. Rooney & Co.
DIALOGUE.
First Drummer —That hotel clerk
in there shows a disposition to run
over everybody who comes in his way.
Second Drummer —I can account
for that.
First Drummer—How ?
Second Drummer—You see he wears
a diamond breast-pin that has so fre
quently been mistaken for the head
light of a locomotive, that he reaUy
thinks he is one. That is why he runs
over people.
The reason why C. J. ROONEY &
CO runs over all competitors is be.
cause of their good goods and low
prices. They carry the largest and
best stock in the country, and sell
goods 25 per cent, lower than any
other Shoe House in Augusta. Polite
attention will be shown to every cus
tomer whether they desire to purchase
or not, and they warrant all goods
when recommended as solid. Call
and see them.
ATEXAN*LAWYER.
In the staid old State of Texas, an
enterprising young lawyers card reads
as follows:
“ I attend to all business in the
State and Federal Courts."
This monopolizes the law business
in that State, and makes it impossible
for other lawyers to do business.
We do not know much about law,
but we do know that C. J. ROONEY
& CO. are doing the heaviest Shoe
and Hat business ever done by any
Shfte house in Augusta.
Such crowds were never seen before
and daily their trade increases, and |
then their clerks are the most polite
in Augusta. You will always feel at
home, and it is a pleasure to show
goods whether you desire to purchase |
or not.
Mark you this: They will make it
entirely satisfactory if you will inform
them of all goods that are not wear
ing as represented. They will ex
change goods at any time, and return
the money if they cannot please you
from their stock. This is more than
any other house will do, for their only
object is to please and give satisfac
tory goods. During the last 30 days
their store has been literally jammed,
from morning till night, by thousands
of customers who were purchasing
their numberless bargains'in Shoes,
Trunks and Umbrellas. Never before
has such a business been done by any
Augusta house, and none but the
pushing and enterprising firm of C.
J. ROONEY & CO. could do it now.
Their idea is that, like meat and corn,
Shoes should be sold on small profits,
as Shoes are about as necessary to
mankind as broad and moat
