BOYCOTTED BY THE GIRLS.
The Fnto of Young Tipplers in
Ports of the Pennsylvania Coal
Hegio ns.
{From the Philadelphia Times.]
The progress of temperance princi
ples among the young Irish-Amel’icons
the coal regions within the last ten
.’Vd is simply without a parallel in tho
history of temperance reform. In fact
the teinpcraiwo feeling is now so strong
that no young man can enter the charm
ingcirvle of female socie y unless he is
<”• avowed temperance n an and wears
la'- father Matthew badge. It has now
■Come to such a pass that tho young
Irish-American ladies will have nothing
to do with the man who drinks. By
rai'tng this boycott against the drink
I hu girls have played the part of true
temperance missionaries, in that they
succeeded in driving the young men
into the societies. An illustration of
this was seen in the town of Beaver
Meadow last spring, when all the girls
in the place combined and resolved to
have nothing to do with any young man
Until he had first signed the pledge and
jo'.jed the St. Aloysius Society. For
awhile it was thought the young ladies
were not in earnest nnd that the boycott
would soon be lifted. But the young
ladies were determined, and when tho
young fellows found this out they sur
rendered, nnd forthwith there was a rush
for admiss on into the local temperance
society. The latter is now in a very
flourishing condition. Os those who
join these temperance societies about
ton out of forty “fall from grace,” in
other words they go back to drink.
But the deserter’s downfall does not
last long. After his debauch he sees the
folly of his ways and thinks how happy
he was when he was sober.
But this is not the worst. All his
friends are traveling in an opposite di
rection and shun tho outcast altogether.
The result is that a man who breaks his
pledge becomes disgusted with himself
and returns to the society. After
taking the pledge for a second time he ,
hardly ever goes back to drink again.
Th'- number who do break the pledge a
second time is only one in seventy.
A member who forfeits his membership
in a society forfeits all his dues paid into
the treasury by him. Ail tho societies
are beneficial, and take good care of the
sick, widows nnd orphans. The St.
Aloysius Society, of AVilkesbarre, has
430 nin es on its rolls nnd over :?<',OOq
in its treasury. The’Fathcr Matthew
Society and the Father Matthew inlets
have 200 more members. Every so
ciety has a handsome uniform.

Among the people of to-day, there are few
indeed, who have not heard of the merits of
Prickly Ash Bark and Berries, as a household
remedy. Teas and drinks have been made of
them for centuries and in hundreds of fami

and kidney diseases, Prickly Ash Bitters now
takes the place of the old system, and is more
beneficial in all troubles of this nature.
