EDITORIAL NOTES.
Judge James S. Hook, of Augusta,
has been appointed as State School
Commissioner.
—
The common school laws of Geor
gia now make it the duty of tax col
lectors to issue separate fi. fas for
poll tax and turn them over to the
county school commissioner and take
his receipt for the same and then is
sue a fi. fa. for what is left of general
•tax and turn over to the sheriff for
•collection.
Washington Chronicle: If we were
a juror no power under Heaven could
make us hang a man on circumstan
tial evidence. Everything may tend
ito show that a man is guilty, but un- ,
less there is some absolute proof we
could not bring ourselves to the point
of reading a verdict which would de
prive a man of bis life. We believe
such a law is morally wrong.
WONDERS NEVER CEASE-
It is now predicted by the knowing
ones in political circles that the com
ing campaign for the Presidency be
tween the Democratic and Hepubli
can parties will bo one conducted
without the usual dish of scandal
served up to suit the depraved taste
of political demagogues. If the above
. prediction should prove true, the
country will have cause to rejoice and ’
peace, neconciliation and ‘ prosperity
may be looked for.
PUSH THE WORK ON-
It is with n good degree of pleas
ure <w.e joatiee that the farmers of this
oounty ane beginning to realize the
necessity <of unity and co-operation.
Following their convictions, efforts
are now being put forth to organize ;
agricultural chibs in every district of
the -county. Surely no better step
«*n be taken, and every farmer
*bould ally himself with the good
work. "The columns of the Sentinel
are open to the sons of toil in this
direction to do them all the good in
its power.
