A Sail A Hair.
A few days ago, Mrs. Johnson,
wife of Mr. Itichard Johnson, who
resides about ten miles from this
place, in attending to her domestic
affairs, had occasion to step out into
the yard and left her little child
alone in the house. She had been
gone hut a few minutes, when the
cries of the child attracted her atten¬
tion. She at once rushed into the
house and found that the little un¬
fortunate creature had accidentally
caught fire and was completely en¬
veloped in the flames. She did all
in the power of a fond mother to
save the life of her darling child,
but could avail nothing—the little
sufferer died in a few minutes. In
her efforts to extinguish the flames,
she too caught on fire and would
also have burned to death, hut for
the timely assistance of others who
heard her cries and hastened at
once to her relief. Mrs. Johnson
was severely burned, hut we are
glad to learn that some hopes are now
entertained of her recovery.
Fight ing for Life.
The Richmond (Va.) State savs:
“Saturday afternoon Stanley Carl,
the superintendent of the menagerie
attached to Coup’s circus now at the
Tredegar Works, narrowly escaped
being torn to pieces by hyenas.
Nothing but his nerve and great
presence of mind saved him from a
horrible death, The animals, it
seems, began fighting among them¬
selves, and Mr. Carl, in order to
quiet them down, entered the cage
with a club and attempted to sepa¬
rate them. The beasts at once stopp¬
ed fighting and flew at the superin¬
tendent, one of them seizing a hand
and biting off a finger. Mr. Carl
fought desperately with the club,
knocking them down time and again,
but it had very little effect upon
them. lie finally succeeded in get¬
ting hold of a pitchfork and after
repeatedly driving the sharp iron
prongs into the animals, kept, them
at hay, and ultimately' worked his
way to the cage door and succeeded
in making his escape. One of the
hyenas, it is said, will die of the
wounds received. Mr. Carl’s wounds
are not considered fatal. Ilis hands
weie badly lacerated.
