NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC TICKET
FOR PRESIDENT,
H0N t GrEOVER CLEVELAND,
OF NEW YORK.
FOR VICE- PRESIDENT,
HON. THOMAS A. HENDRICKS >
OF INDIANA.
FOR CONGRESS
Tknth Conhjcbwion'al DmnucT,
UVEa-j-G-eo-X?; iBarcvixes-,
OF
RICHMOND COUNTY.
Our Nominees.
In this issue of the IIkcokdkr, we
gladly hoist the names of Cleveland
and Hendricks as (he Democratic
nominees for President and Vice
President of the P oiled Stater. They
are men of pure lives and untarnish¬
ed characters.
Gov. Cleveland was born in an
obscure little town in New Jersey in
Ille year 1837. Self-taught and self
made, he rose from a Fnvj-c office
lioy, u>-tieeomi! a sheriff, then mayor
of Buffalo, and now the Governor of
;the great, state of New York. Ills
work of re-form in Now York has
given him a popularity, second
America only to Tildeii, and has se¬
cured for him the nomination to the
jjghes.l office in the gift of the ] H’O
plo.
Thomas A. Hendricks, of Indiana,
js also a pure and patriotic man; I.is
nomination will carry his own stale
and his name will give strength to
the ticket. Altogether, the ticket is
perfectly satisfactory to the Demo
Yeratic party; in i'qvi, i:„ in the surfs!
and most satisfactory ticket, that
have been nominated. It fur¬
nishes the party w ith a leader of
great patriotism and noble courage,
who, by liis strenuous efforts in be¬
half of reform, lias already reared
for himself a lasting monument in
tlie hearts of his fellow-countrymen.
Cleveland will carry the doubtful
states more likely than any man that
could have been nominated. At the
head of the Democratic ticket, he
will poll the full strength of ti;cpar¬
ty, and call in all the splitting fac¬
tions of llu‘ other parties. Indepen¬
dents will rally to his help, jitul all
parties can unite on him with full
assurance.
Then, with Cleveland and Ifoti
/Ipiyiks as our standard bearers, let
every lover of a free and honest
government gather under the bright
and hallowed folds of the dear old
Democratic banner, and victory will
be our reward in November.

Or the InffuoMce ol’a Good Wile.
Mrs. Bryan in tho Sunny
narrates tl>o following story on
les; : quth.orit.y than that of Gen. John
JI. Gordon. It occurred in the
years of the war when tlie edge of
enthusiastic patriotism had worn
si wav. A soldier in the Virginia
army heard, through ‘ a letter recudv
ed by a comrade, that his family
xv ere in great distress through
ness and destitution, lie applied
for leav,' to go home, but could n*it
obtain it. He laid his petition be
fore the highest authority and repre¬
sented his case with desperate elo
quqjfce, but a battle was impending,
every man was want at the front, and
bis prayer was refused. Then he
went without leave. 1 Jo stole from
the command and reached home, af¬
ter weary tramping night and day.
When he entered his cottage it was
night, his children slept, but his wife
>at by the hearth. She sprang to
lnget him and clung to him, sobbing
for joy.
“And you afraid—” got a furlough after all

He shook his head.
“Y ou did not desert surely. You
would not, John?”

him arid, begged him to return at
once. She and the children could
get along. If they suffered, why
anyt.Iiing was better than he should
stain himself with dishonor. Her
strong sense of right prevailed.
Though he knew that to return af¬
ter desertion meant court-martial and
probably deat.lq he went hack, lie
was tried and condemned to he shot.
The sentence would surely have been
carried into effect but for the inter¬
vention of Gen. Gordon. That kind
hearted o(hcei-sought him out, heard
his story and used his influence to
obtain a pardon for the
condemned man. A few days later
the battle of Severn Pines took place.
Near the close of that terrible light
Gen. Gordon was near a battery
which had done gallant execution,
but was now all but disabled. The
men and horses belonging to it, lay
dead or dying. Only one man stood
at the guns when the General rode
up. 11 is face was blackened with
gunpowder, blood poured from a
deep wound in his side, but he was
loading his gun with his hint strength.
He rammed down the charge, appli¬
ed the match, and as the hall sped
on its errand, ho dropped down dj
mg.
“Don’t you know me, GeiieralF'
he said, as Gen. Gordon paused lx
side him, struck with admiration nm :
pity, “i am the man you saved I ron
being shot;the man with such a gooi,
wife. Write a line to her, pleas
General, and tell her I d.ed a faith
ltd soldier, because of her”

Sam Jones is a wonderful man. I!
