IN MEMORY,
01 our beloved companion Mr. E. D.
Burnette, who departed this life at
Manzanilla, Cuba Oct. 20th 1898. In
the cause to which he had volunteered
and truly I can say, no one has, nor
ever will, discharge the duties of a
soldier more faithfully and dilllgeut
than lie. He was never called upon
at any hour but what he willingly and
eargerly responded so much so even.
No doubt, was the one great perpet¬
rator of his death. As he volunteered
to preform a duty that exposed him to
severe health. And lie returned sick
and never recovered. His suffering
were brief. As he lingered but a few
days before crossing the great river of
death! although away from home and
love ones, he succumbed to it without
a mu rmer, he had so gained the esteem
of his companions in arms that they
were attached to him as a brother,
therefore it was a sad parting and a
day long to be remembered by us for
as the earth closed over him and the
grave claimed him as its own. There
were more than one tear stained eye,
and head bowed in grief.
I know it was hard for Ins dear
mot her to give him up even so it was
with us. But deal li sooner or later
claimed] us as its own, and we know
the Lord doetli all things well and
will receive us unto Him. So that day
I can stand up and testify when the
I ' ,ord olas P 8 him by the hand and Say
etli: “Well done thou good and faith¬
ful Servant.” A brother soldier of Co.
L. 3rd U, S. V. W. D. Coney.
By onr neighbors Col. and Mrs. V B
Robinson the Headlight was handed
us. containing the above tribute to onr
boys memory by one of his comrades,
yet unknown to us. It is sweet to hear
our darling spoken of in such terms
by one who marched side by side witli
III in in bis last days on earth, filled
with the only real hardships of his
sweet young life. We cherish tho lov¬
ing sympathy bestow.eh to us by his,
and our friends far and near, and
while it can not cure, with Gods love
it helps us to endure.
In our home all so snd,
Our tears like rain drops fall,
For onr precious loved one,
Wlio was lain in Cuban soil.
We mi«s you dear one, ohlwa miss
you,
And sigli for your face we no longer
behold.
But sweet is our hope in moments
of anguish,
That we will meet in the city of Gold.

Fanning as l see it, is one of the
best occupations, that man can follow
for a living. It is a business that nan
may carry on in peace, because tlie
farm is a private affair ami each land
lord lias tlie right to shape matters in
a way to | lease his laborers, to satisfy
bis family and to correspond with his
pocket. Some men are so tyrannical
and Lord it all in their way, that it
is not possible for them to ever have
peace at anything they might go at,
they would not for one moment con¬
sider tlie feeling of any one, or credit
the opinion of tlie best member of the
family, though it be some times in
tears, but where tlie land lord will
agree to yield certain little little point
and saeralice small amounts in order
to satisfy as near as possible all par¬
ties concerned, everything will go on
much better, a tnan inay start his
business with plenty of means and
through tin* selfishness of hi* own
management, cause a general dissatis¬
faction among iiis laborers, and so dis¬
unite tlie efforts of his cotvjtrkers, that
the farm will be a failure, and the
money which Helms invested is all lost
by reason of his own supposed inde¬
pendence, upon the other hand a man
may yield the little points and make
tlie lit l ie sacrifices in order to bring
about the general satisfaction necces
sary to success, and his farm will go
oo without any trouble; I don’t mean
that von should yield to anything
wrong but there will be plenty of iu
dances in whiuh you can yield to
right, and there will be plenty of iit
tlp sacrifice* which you can rightful¬
ly i&.ike that yon have wrongfully re¬
of (fie other man, and all this
'lone, I lie land lord can go out on tlie
farm early in the morning set forth
his programme for tlie day, and his
laborers will greet him with a cheer¬
ful countenance, and press forward to
<xeciite lus will.
Early in the morn,
They will side corn,
Later in the day.
Not at all play.
More intense tlie heat,
Quicker move the feet,
Longer be the row,
Tho faster they will go.
