A 300-Fool Column of Water.
Ileeentl.v some well-drillers at .Santa
Fe Springs, Cal., were thrown into
confusion by their drill shooting out
•if the ground with a terrific explo¬
sion. A blaze was applied to the shaft
made by the drill, and instantly a col¬
umn of flame leaped up. The gas
well burned brightly for some days;
then the supply seemed to be exhaust¬
ed. The diggers were drilling for wa¬
ter, and not. gas; so the drill was put
Into tin 1 shaft again and began to work
below the ,’iOO foot depth already
reached. In a few hours a rumbling
was heard in the earth, and soon out
shot the drill again, and following it
a column of water that reached n
height of 300 feet. The well-diggers
decided that they had found what they
lmd been hunting for, and the sur¬
rounding landscape soon took on the
appearance of n small lake. If the
water supply holds out It will be di¬
rected to irrigating the farm lands In
the vicinity. It is estimated that the
water supply under the present pres¬
sure would be sufficient to irrigate
over 5,000 acres of land.

Why the Civil Eogineer Moved the Railroad
a Mile.
Tiie engineer who lays out a railroad
dislikes to move a stake when it iias
once been driven. If he thinks lie is
right lie will fight or quit, but he hates
(o compromise. In ‘The Story of the
Railroad,” Cy Wannnn cites a charac¬
teristic anecdote.
(hi' o, when the present chief engi¬
neer of a Western railroad was locat¬
ing a line iu Missouri, he was asked
to change the stakes, and refused.
After tiie stakes had been sc-t. a young
unshaven man appeared and asked
that the road be “moved over a bit.”
"The road can not be changed,”
promptly returned the engineer; “this
is the best place for it.”
The man went into a house, got a
rifle, came out, and puiied up the
stakes. Tiie iudignant engineer start
nd toward him, but was intercepted by
an elderly woman.
“Can’t you move your road over a
little piece, mister?” she asked.
“I don’t see why 1 should,” respond
ed the engineer. “My business Is to
locate the line, and you can call on the
company for damages. What does
that young blackguard mean by sitting
there on a slump with a gun?” he an¬
grily demanded.
“That’s Nip lie ain’t no blackguard.
That’s Nip, my son.”
“Well, I’ll nip Him if lie gets funny.”
“Oh, no, you won’t, I ain’t afraid o’
that,” said the woman. “What coine
over me when I seen you starting for
Nip was that p’r’nps you had a mother,
and how bad slic’d feel to have you
come home that way.”
“What way?”
“Well, if you persist in driving them
stakes there, you’ll go homo dead.”
“Look here, do you think I’m to be
bluffed by that ruffian?”
“Nip ain’t no ruffian,” said the wo¬
man. “You see, we’ve always lived
here -Nip was born here—an’ when the
grurillas come an’ called out paw an’
shot him, we burled him jist wliar lie
fell, nn’ we’re always kept it as a
reservation, an’ Nip lie’s determined
you sha’n’t disturb it, flint’s all*”
“Then you don’t object to too rail¬
road ?”
"Lord o’ mercy, no! Wc want t lie
road, Out we don’t want you to disturb
paw’s grave.”
“Come,” Haiti the engineer, "let’s go
and see Kip.”
When they bad come up to the
slump, (tie liijt engineer held out bis
hand. Nip took it, but kept ills eyes
on (lie stranger.
“Here it is,” said flit* woman, touch
inff a low stone lifflitly with her foot.
“I see,” said the engineer, “Wl‘ rail
miss that easily enough.”
lie moved a mile of road. From that
day forward until the road was liu
ishod, and Ioiik after, the widow's
home was (lie stopping place for tlio

Imported Gloves f#r Womes.
Importers of women’s gloves say
that it seems to be a fad to wear no
gloves during the hot weather, brown
hands evidently being considered
quite the thing. The prevalence of
the shirt waist also has had a ten¬
dency to curtail the use of gloves. A
noticeable feature of the present styles
of gloves used with long sleeves is the
wretched and impracticable mode of
some fasteners now being used to quite
an extent by women who do not pay
much attention to small matters. The
other day on a Broadway cable-car
some women were seen with gloves
which they were evidently unable to
fasten at the wrists. With some clasp
attachments a wrist must conform to
the glove, but this is not the case with
gloves having hooks that fit any size
wrist perfectly. Colors remain much
the same as in past seasons. White
glace, with black embroidery, are pop¬
ular both for street and evening wear.

In the United States Circuit Court in San

that is of great interest to manufacturers
of proprietary articles and to publishers.
The case in question was the suit of tiie
California Fig Syrup Co. to obtain a per¬
joining manent injunction, which was granted, en¬
n large non-secret manufacturing
concern and others from using the name
“Syrup of Figs," or “Fig Syiup,” and or¬

courts will protect the valuable reputa¬
tion of an article of merit, built up by
probity of word as well as by extensive ad¬
vertising, so that tiie owner may reap tiie
full benefit. The overwhelming evidence
presented, as to the merits of the company's tiie

“ I was a great sufferer from female

“ My sister advised me to try Lydia

and to my great surprise I am cured.

“ When I wrote to you I was very

The doctors did not seem to help me,
and one said I could not live three

There seemed to be such a drawing
