THE RECORD’S DEVIL.
A Warm Article in a Cool Place— If
You Dont Want to Get Hot Why
Don’t Read This.
Say here, did you know that
Bryan and the democratic party
is a back No. We bate to believe
>tand tin sad to relate, but Bryan
is politically dead. The star has
fallen never to rise again, so Bry¬
an, old boy, fare thee well.
What’s the matter with Wrights
ville having a knitting mill, shoe
factory, a small cotton mill etc.
1 Isnty capital right here at home
among our citizens to start aP
these enterprises in motion, and
while our beautiful little city is
on the up-grade of prosperity let
the citizens awake from their Rip
Van Winkle slumbers and make
the town what she ought to be, an
up-to-date and hustling business
point.
A subscriber said lie would pay
• ns for the paper this week if he
lived. He died. Another said he
would he see us this week too. llo is
blind. Still another said he would
pay us this week or go to the dev¬
il. He’s gone.
Tbo leaders claim that the dem¬
ocratic party needs ro-organiza
lion to win out four years hence.
Right they are. Dor it will take
a re-hashing and a coming togetli
or of all the reform movomeuls to
down Hanna ami his son WilPe.
A sharp duck he—Hanna, Per
imps they can induce Cleveland to
help them, and if so, things will
bo o k, for Cleveland “am a dem¬
ocrat from de heart,” and how he
lovos the party is a sin, and how
he treated the parly in the last
• lection is a “wussar” sin. Clove
land knows which sido his bread
is buttered on and the republicans
keop it well buttered.
Come on doivn tho lino ajid let
some of our moneyed men oroct a
new and modern hotel, net that
tho ones hero are not well kept,
etc..but there is filthy lucre is hotel
keeping and a new and modern
hotel with all the latest improve¬
ments would induce many to come
here to see our little city and in
this way cause people to locate
and build among us. If it is not
done now it will be done sooner or
lutor mid the early bird is tbo one
that has (ho fullest craw.
Thu girls of a neighboring to wu
have formed asocioty and have for
their motto : “The lips that touch
liquor shall never touch ours." The
same is true here, we learn, and
the boys are drinking their whis
key through a straw. They can’t
do without it.
The row on the train recently
between two members of tho Geor
gia legislature is a disgrace to that
Body. It is a great pity that such
occurred, and that it was caused
too because of uncontrollable ap¬
petites for “booze” alias “snake
pizon” and better known as whia
key, which we learn, was really
the true cause. Shame on
counties, shame to the state «tf
Georgia and shame on that honor
able body. No wonder the better
dement of that party tried
bust to smother the affair.
Southern farmers should
permit tlie prices of cotton to di
vert their minds frost tho
ty of diversifying thoir crop*, [ i
is diversification that their hope
of independence and wealth lies.
Cotton prices will not always re¬
main high. Seasons of depres¬
sion wrl come again when those
farmers who continue to make cot¬
ton their sola crop will have
abundant occasion to regret their
lack of foresight.
This devil visited tho lunatic
asylum recently ami was mistaken
by a lunatic as being a fellow suf¬
ferer just arrived, Becoming con
fidential the crazy man asked the
other what had made him crazy,
and to humor him I replied: “Try¬
ing to make money out of the
newspaper business.” “Rats,” ex¬
claimed the demented man, “you
are not crazy; you’re just a d—m
fool.”
Watch our prediction that it
wont be long liefore there will be
a scramble for small houses of two
or three rooms in Wrightsville.
Already there is a demand for
small houses that will rent from
four to five dollars per month, and
we would say to our property
owners to wake up to the situa
tion. Don’t charge too much for
them and you will see families
move in here and the town flourish
and grow. The workman is the one
who supports the town and i f he
can get house rent reasonable you
can’t keep him away.
Ever}’ - community numbers
among its citizens men ot “pull
back” persuasion. They are never
in the front ranks of any enter¬
prise, but mingle with the tail-en
dora, and instead of pushing from
the rear for the purpose of help¬
ing those in front, who are pulling
with might and main, the contra¬
ry individuals doggedly rear back
on thoir haunches and throw cold
water on every movement not cal¬
culated to bring them direct pecu¬
niary gain. There are none cf this
class in Wrightsville as we know
of, but such men are a detriment
to the growth and up-building of
a community.
If some of our subscribers don’t
make baste and “cough”up hang
fired soon the devil of this paper
will have to leaso his stomach out
to the town band for a bass drum.
The measure of true manhood is
not what one has, so much ns what
one is. A man’s lifedoes not con¬
sist in what ho possesses, but in
tin use lie makes of his earthly
goods. A man may bo *poor and
yet be truly great, a man may be
very rich, and yet be really a small
man. Character is what counts.
To do good to others through what
we possess, is what marks the true
man. To live for others is to have
true life; to live for self is to real¬
ly die. Thus it was with our Lord
He saved others by not saving
himself. lie died that wo might
live.—Selected.
Farmers cannot find a bettor
place to sell their produce than in
Wrightsville. Our merchants al¬
ways pays the highest market
price for cotton. Every conve¬
nienco for the transaction of busi¬
ness can be found here, and oblig¬
ing and friendly citizens will make
it to your interest to buy vour
winter supplies right here. The
Record can always speak a good
word for any person or firm rep¬
resented in this paper.
We all thank tho Lord that wo
haven’t got the habits of tho other
person, at the same time ho is
thanking the Lord ho hasen’t got
fBe Bad habits of us.
In one of tho mountain counties
the state of Arkansaw a man
took a paper and tho citizens for
miles around would gather to hear
i 1 read when it came. A listener
one tinio asked : “What are they
doing in congress?” “Oh,” replied
the reader, “they are playing the
dickens over them. They have
passed a law adding two months
to tho year, and the worst part of
it is, they liavo mndn them both
winter mouths.” “Blame their
fool heads,” said tho listener, “and
wo are out'of fodder.”
Wrightsville is without doubt
the best town in this section of
the state. She is building for her¬
self a splendid reputation as a
educational centre. Surrounded
by the finest ot farming lands, a
Btrong intellectual citizenship, a
healthful climate, she is
strenuous efforts to enlarge and
crease her territory, offering every
inducement to those far and near
who are looking for p'rofit and in¬
vestment. Let us all give a strong
pull and a pull together lick, and
we’ll receive full reward for our
labor.
A fellow devil tells me that a
man named Tom Jones recently
died and a bulletin stating that
Thos. Jones, Esq., had departed
his life for heaven at 12 p. m, was
posted on the door. A bad boy
placed the following notice under
that of the neighbors: ‘Heaven,
2:30 p. m.—Jones not arrived; ex¬
citement intense.”
Yes, indeed. And many a fun¬
eral sermon would receive a some¬
what similar rebuttal if there were
wire connections between the
places. And what a difference
there would lie in the epitaphs on
the tombstones, if they waited for
telegraphic advice from the other
world, before they carved them.
