Guerry’s Position on the Di spen
sary.
Macon, Ga., Nov. G, 1901.
Hon. Seaborn Wright, Member
the House, Atlanta, Ga.
Doav Sir : l havo not yet re
ceived the copy of tho dispen
sary bill you were to send me,
and I presume that there has
been some delay in printing it.
read it while with you in the
House the other day, but under
considerable disadvantage, as I
was several times interrupted
during its perusal. I will now,
however, without further delay,
put in writing the particular
view I have of this bill, under
the peculiar circumstances,
Reaffirming my opposition to
the principle of dispensary laws
and my opinion that sooner or
later dispensaries will prove so
bad in their effects as to bo lit
tle worse, if any, than sales of
liquor by ' individuals under
license, yet if you are certain
you cannot in your present bill
procure by its passage in the
House aud Senate tho abolition
of barrooms, I would like to see
passed, your bill amending the
local option law, so as to allow
a vote by tho people of the
counties on the question of dis
pensaries, not for the purpose
of enabling them to procure
dispensaries, but solely for the
purpose of euablingthem to de
feat dispensaries. As matters
now stand, dispensaries are be
ing forced on tho people of dif
ferent prohibition counties with
out allowing them to bo heard,
and a general hill like yours
when it becomes a law will pre
vent any further local legisla
tion of this' sort, as it would
then bo unconstitutional. In
other words, I am in favor *of
your bill as a preventive of dis
pensaries and not otherwise.
Of course if you cannot get
your bill passed until all the
local dispensary hills are pass
ed, then it might do more harm
than good. This letter you are
at liberty to use either publicly
or privately,
Yours truly,
(Signed.) DuPont Guerry.
As some people are inclined
to criticise Hon. DuPont
Guerry’s position on the Seab
Wright dispensary bill,accusing
him of inconsistency, we pub
lish above his letter to Hon.
Seaborn Wright, the author,
showing that Mr. Guerry is op
posed to dispensaries. We
trust that this letter will set at
rest any pne who has accused
him of inconsistent positions on
tho whiskey question. It is
strange how hard a man will
labor aud look for an excuse to
oppose another for office when
the former is opposed to the
latter under any and all cir
cumstances and desires some
excuse for his opposition,

The prohibition X
There are now
dates in the field fc. the gover
norship, Messrs. OWrry, Eslill
and Terrell. The probability is
that this trio will complete the
entries. It is one of these tnree
men who will reqoive tho Dem
ocratic nomination which will
bo equivalent to an election.
Who will it be ?
There are in this State two
organizations which propose to
take a hand in this governor
making, the State prohibition
association and the interdenom
inational temperance associa
tion. The first is*'a political
organization, and the second is
a religious combination, both
having the same purpose in
view - the suppression of the
liquor traffic.. They are acting
in conjunction* and if the mem
bership they represent could be
counted on to vote as they pray
their joint influence would
elect any man they prefer.
The allied organizations have
produced and applied their
yardstick to tho candidates.* It
is (his double question: Will
you, as a candidate for gov
ernor, take position in .favor of
electing senators and represen
tives who favor state prolnbi
tion,* and if elected,recommend
in your message,aud give yeut
executive approval to such leg
islation as may bo calculate!
to abolish bar rooms and miti
gate the evils incident to the
traffic in intoxicating beverages
The candidates have all sub
mitted to measurement by this
yard stick. Mr, Guerry an
swers the double question affir
matively, and Mr, Estill and
Mr. Terrell negatively.
Though the allied organiza
tions do not state so, the im
plied obligation to support the 1
candidate who should measure
up to the standard is apparent.
Mr. Guerry being tho only can
didate who has measured up to
requirements it is the moral du
ty of those who have applied
the yardstick to support him.
The inter-denominational or
ganization has been officially
endorsed by the two strongest
denominations in the state, aud
tho moral obligation to support
Mr. Guerry now rests upon ev
ery member of those denomi
nations. If they will meet this
obligation Mg. Guerry will be
elected in tfie primary,
When a yardstick is applied
to candidates those who apply
it as well as those to whom it
is applied are being measured
Tho primary returns will tell
how near members of the chur
ches represented by the inter
denominational union vote as
they pray.—Augusta Tribune.
