McDuffie Progress. MATT w: GROSS, Editor and Proprietor. The Official Organ of McDuffie Co. Entered at the Postofflce in Thomson Ev ery Friday, as Second-class Mutter. THOMSON, GA., Dec. 25 100:3. A GOOD MOVE. § It is with pleasure we note that the Slate school book commission has in' aisled that the speech made by Jeffer son Davis, on his withdrawal from the senate of the United Slates, be incor porated in the readers which are to be used by tlic public school children of the state. The speech in question is probably the besL exposition extant of the views and motives which aclnaled the people who formed the Confeder ate stales of Ameiica. r It is not with any desire that the se cession idea he perpetuated that we wifeh for this remarkable address of the President of the Confederacy to attain a wider popularity with the young gen eration. That iden, and the cause for which Jefferson Davis spoke and gave the ripest yeats of his manhood have passed onward from the realm of the actual into that misty hournc of things that were, but are not now. Nor is it with any wish that any old, healed wounds of sectional prejudice he quick ened into painful pulsings again. All that is hnppily past—time blends all jangled chords as space gray mist with blue sky blends. Still it is only just that the children should know what it was their fathers and grandfathers gave their brawn and liruin and blood in the attempt to bring about. It is only right that they ahouhl have both sides of this question pul before them iu the language of the chiefest actors on that boisterous stage where osie of the world’s greatest dra mas was played out. The civil war marks nn epoch, and one of which every school child must lenrn whether ho will or not. It right that he should have both sides of the case presented to him hy the pro per advocates. The motives which in spired the leaders of the Southern Con federacy were high and pure, nnd the speech of Davis is a clear voicing of them. To read it with intelligence and with out prejudice cannot do otherwise than quicken the appreciation of the render for tho author ot it; tiro his ad miration; stimulate his sympathy for a , disinterested spirit, nnd make a better citizen of him. For no matter what a man’s belief’s are lie to be judged by his devotion and his unswerving loyalty to them. The high ideals of Davis and his fol lowers, as the wiunowiug wings of time blow all the chaff of discord away, shlno ever with a clearer luster. Per haps their judgement vvns foulty; but their motives were right. It is good that the youth learn of these motives at first bund. The hook commission has done well.—Atlanta Journal. Wo copy tho above editorial from the Atlanta Journal of last Friday, and wo desire to endorse every word that is contained therein. This great, speech of tho immortal Jefferson Davis should be handed down to posterity iu our beloved Southland ns tho exponent of our rights uuder tho constitution of this great country, nnd a living and unan swerable declaration that we had a right to lonvo the union whenever it became evident that the const'lution was being violated by pnrtisau poli ticians—and leave without being bruud ed as “traitors,” etc. This speech reveals tho sentiments of every Southern heart at the thodglit of leaving tho union, which had beeu established by Southern patriots and sealed with the blood of Southern he roes. Yes! let this speech bo road by every child in Georgia every day from Itabun to Decatur, from the mighty waters of the Chattahoochee to the rolling billows of the Atlantic, and our children ever be taught to keep sacred the memory of the Confederate heroes and tho piinciples for winch they bled nnd died on many hard- fought battle fields without dampening their ardor or diminishing their fervor for a glorious, great and reunited coun. t>7- Safeguard Against Aeeldeut.
