WHEN TAFT SPOKE IN THOMSON.
During the next four, (and per
haps eight) y ars you will fre
quently hear tho expression,
“When Taft spoke in Thomson.”
Not that Taft said anything much
in his speech, for lie did not, for
the simple reason that there waa
nothiug to say.
But he did moro than that—he
made a favorable impression upon
hi* bearer* and inspired them with
confidence in the tnau Taft.
Of the five hundred people pho
heard his five minute apeecn, prac
tically all of them formed the
•oaiuo opinion—that he it a broad,
just and generous man, and the
South ha* nothing to fear from
him.

But in effect the Editors of the
Reporter tell ua: “If we hnvent
the population, we have something
else ” They then intimate that
the deposits in tho Washington
ba’iks are more than double those
in the Thomson banks. We do
not know tho figures and are hot
prepared to say, but wo are lather
inclinod to tako tho Reporters
word for it, Since the Confeder
ate Government went to peicos
somewhere around Washington
the general opinion has prevailed
that ‘there is plenty of money in
Washington.”
Moreover, there ifl no reason
why the merchants of Washington
should not. carry largo bank ac
counts. They do a largo and ex
tensive business, and make very
large and extensive profits, and
these taken together should rapid
ly build up large bank accounts.
Not so in Thomson. Hero compe
tition Is fierce and tho margins of
profit narrow, and while these
things are drawing trade to Thom,
son from the very gates of Wash
ington they do not swell the tlo-
poaita in our local banks.
Ab to the railroad receipts of
Thomson not being a third aB
great as those of Washington wo
know the Reporter is in er.w. He
simply wrote without examining
the records for the last ten years.
He should do so, and lie would be
surprised to find out how close the
little piney woods boy in knee
pants is pressing the old fnt man
for siipromecy.
As to postal receipts we only
know that the United States gov
ernment puts the posto(Uce9 of
Thomson and Washington in tho
same class, and for newspapers we
know that Thomson has three that
are “still a kicking” and uone
that has died as many deaths as
one iu th« nourishing town of
Washington.
But in all seriousness we lov;
Washington, and love her brave
and noble hearted people. None
better inhabit the great State of
Grorgia, aud far be it troui us to
,«nvy them their prosperity. If
envy we have at all for Washing
ton, it is for that which b1.c her
self has not used—her opportuni
ties.

population (something more than 1500
than Thomson, “but,” says he, “the
Inst census was taken nearly ten years
ago, and In tho meantime Thomson
tins been growing and Washington
was grown." To Thomson in Ills knee
pants wo are certain Washington ap
pears to be a full grown man, hut in
reaching matured years lie lias not
ceased to grow and when the count is
made in 1910 the good people of the
metropolis of McDuffie will find
•Washington, located in the good old
county of Wilkes," has added many
new homes and many new citizens du
ring tho decade, not a few of whom
have come from Thomson.
When the banks of Thomson show
deposits half as great as those of Wash
ington; when railroud receipts- are a
third as great and when postal receipts
equal those of Washington, and when
Thomson gets two real live newspapers
then and only then, Brother Farmer
will we believe that Thomson Is get
ting into Washington’s class as to pop
ulation and commercial importance.—
