Australian Grasshoppers,
Here is something funny. In
Western Australia, where domestic
servants ure nlinost unprocurable
and housewives do nearly all their
own work, husbands are known as
grasshoppers. The connection is
not obvious, but tuny he explained
after the manner of other house
holds much nearer than those at
the antipodes. Wives who are their
own servants arc compelled to re
cuperate at the seaside, and conse
quently Western Australia lords of
creation in their absence prepare
their own meals and do other do
mestic dutk’s. Locally husbands
thus employed have received the
name grasshoppers ns tho masculine
for the more familiar word grass
widow, long since applied to tho de
serted wife.—Ilostou Herald.
Vulture and Rattl*r.
An odd battle between a California
vulture and a rattlesnake wm wit
nessed In the Coco pah uiounlaloa of
tower California. It was In the early
1 morning. The big bird had seized the
j snake liehliul the heed and waa strug-
' gilng upward with its writhing, deadly
I-burden. The snake's captor np|M*ared
j aware that its victim waa dangerous.
! The burden was heavy, as the reptile
was nearly live feel long. i
The grip of the bird on tho snakes
la sly was not of the best. 'I he stiuke
roomed to t»e sipilrtnlng from its rap
tor's talons, at least sutllcleiitly to en
able it to strike. Its triangular head
was seen to recoil and dart at the
mass of fenthers.
tl did this once or twice, and then
with a shriek the vulture dropped its
prey. The bird was probably 500 feet
or so above I lie observers. 'I he ns-
tofilwhed men were then treated to a
spectacle seldom seen. Few birds but
n vulture could accomplish such a feat.
The Instant tho snoke escaped from
the bird s clutches It dropped earth- !
ward Itke n shot, and liko a shot the j
bird dropped after It. catching It in j
midair with a grip that caused death, j
At nay rate, the snake censed to wrlg- |
gle. and the vulture soured away to a ;
mountain peak to devour Its hard j
earned meal.
Instant what EHTbeen done, Me ai
quickly decided to turn If to his own
advantage by throwing three “fllp-
finps" while holding tBe dummy
weight. He was greeted with a por
ted round of applause, and the audl-
ei„. P declared It to be the greatest
feat they had ever witnessed.
