IN MEMORIAE
Mrs. Georgia Durham Watson was
born in 1857 and “passed” on May
the 1th, 1923. At the age of twenty
she married Hon. Thomas E. Watson.
Three children blessed this union. All
preceded her to the grave.
She was put to supreme tests, hut
under severe trials she showed the
great nobility of character. She
united with the “Christian Church”
in early life, and in God she put her
trust. As a mother she was firm,
gentle, patient, thoughtful, unselfish,
self-sacrificing. Oh how she felt
the emptiness of her life, when the
children were all taken from her, but
with meek submission she bravely
bore her sorrow striving always to
he cheerful and thoughtful of others.
As a wife her loyalty could not have
been equaled. In all the varied vicis
situdes of the life of her husband in
public and political campaigns as
well as in private life, she stood by
his side a real helpmeet. During the
44 years of her married life she had
the sweet consciousness of knowing
that every duty was well performed.
When the great shock of her hus
band’s death came she asked a friend
for spiritual help that she might he
conscious of God’s presence and
strength. The answered prayer was
wonderful, during the three days of
waiting for his body, and the strain
of the immense funeral she was “mas
ter of the situation,” her calmness,
her self-control and strength could
not have been surpassed. She was
very unselfish, always thinking of
others, and what good deeds she
could do.
No one in the community that was
sick or in trouble hut have been help
ed and comforted by her. Write
your name by kind deeds upon the
hearts of others, and you will not be
forgotten. One of her sweetest
characteristics to me was her meek
ness. Christ-like meekness. There
is indeed no spiritual quality more
truly synonymous with firmness and
strength than is meekness for it is
indeed submission to the will of God.
sincerity was another beautiful qual
ity. During the unbroken friend
ship of many, many years I never
saw insincerity in her. She possess
ed unusual intillectual strength and
business ability. In her quiet, gentle
way her executive ability brought
things to pass. Her loving nature
manifest at all times to all who came
in contact with her in love for flowers
and for birds, and animals, pets filled
her home and followed her every
foot-step No greater tribute could
be paid any one than was paid her
when a sister-in-law said to me “She
was the most perfect human being I
ever knew.” The last months of her
life were spent in making ready. Her
last charity was furnishing an Orph
anage built by the Christian church.
She did not care to remain on earth.
She put her business in perfect order,
her household and all material things,
but she did not neglect the greatest
of all, Spiritual readiness. She medi
tated and talked to those nearest to
her about Spiritual conditions here
and hereafter. Both our joy and our
friendships must be Spiritualized and
this can be attained only through the
understanding of friendship with
God. With conviction she could say:
“Not alone was I called to go
Far from the ties which earth
deems dear;
I’m journing onward with a Friend,
Whose presence all the way doth
cheer.
I could not be content to stay,
Where earth-ties kept me closely
bound;
For thought was reaching out to find
That man was never of the ground.
That all earth honors are but dross,
That all earth pleasures are but
dreams,
In humbly taking up my cross,
A light athwart my pathway
gleams.
Love, stablish thou my trust in good;
My faith to understanding bind.
Fidelity my watchword is—
This thus I find my life in thine.
Secure, I gladly onward go;
Should joy attend or grief impend,
I’ll never swerve; for well I know
I’m not alone,—God is my Friend.”

Construction Day by Day]
So great and so constant is the growth of demand |
for telephone service that the Bell System invests
throughout the country an average of three-quarters
of a million dollars every working day for new tele
phone plant.
• i
New aerial lines are always under construction or
extension, new subways are being dug and cables laid, |
larger building accommodations are under way, more
switchboards are in process of building or installation,
and added facilities of every description being mus
tered into service to care for the half million or more
new subscribers linked to the System every year.
This nation-wide construction, this large expendi- ,
ture of funds, could not be carried out efficiently or
economically by unrelated, independent telephone or- !
ganizations acting without co-operation in different
sections of the country. Neither could it be carried out
efficiently or economically by any one organization dic
tating from one place the activities of nil. In the Bell
System all the associated companies share common
manufacturing and purchasing facilities which save
millions of dollars annually. They share scientific dis
coveries and inventions, engineering achievements, and
operating benefits which save further millions. But
the management of service in each given territory is in j
the hands of the company which serves that territory
and which knows its needs and conditions.
By thus combining the advantages of (.union and
co-operation with the advantages of local initiative and
responsibility, the Bell System has provided/the nation
with the only type of organization which could spend
with efficiency and economy, the .millions of dollars
being invested in telephone service.
Approximately two million dollars will be expended
in Georgia during 1923 for new additions to your tele
phone system.
