LUKE, THE BELOVED PHYSICIAN
LE5BBON TEXT—Luke 1:1-4; Acts 1:
I; Acts 16:9-15; Col. 4:14; II Tim. 4:11.
GOLDEN TEXT—"A friend loveth at
All times and a brother la born for
Adversity."—Prov. 17:17.
PRIMARY TOPIC—Luke’s Story of
the Great Physician.
JUNIOR TOPIC—Luke, Paul's Friend.
INTERMEDIATE AND SENIOR TOP
IC—How Luke Helped Paul.
YOITNO PEOPLE AND ADIJLT TOPIC
•x-lmke's Contribution to Christianity.
I, Luke the Historian (Lulu* 1:15;
et. Acts 1:1).
Luke wns a writer of great distinc
tion. His style is clear and pic
turesque. The pieces of writing left
US are the Gospel of Lnke and the
Acts. According to Acts 1:1, the gos
pel was written to set down In order
the things which .Testis began to do
end to tench, and Acts 1:3 to show
whut the risen and ascended Lord
wns continuing to do and to tench.
While here on earth lie only began to
do and to show certain tilings, but
from Ills place of glorious exaltation,
He is continuing His mighty work by
the Holy Spirit through the disciples.
Concerning the contents of the gos
pel, he asserts first, that the source
of his Information was recorded state
ments of eye witnesses. He assures
us that these statements have been
verified by him. Second, thnt lie had
made a systematic statement of these
facts in order to strengthen the faith
of his friend, Theophilus.
,11. Luke the Beloved Physician
(Col. 4:14).
He evidently wns a skilled physiclnn
OS his descriptions of the diseases
which Jesus cured shows. Ills de
scription of the symptoms of the dis
eases shows his capability. It wn3 left
to the physician to portray with vivid
exactness the virgin birth by means
of which the Eternal Son became in
carnate. He was not only skillful but
tenderly sympathetic. This sympathy
Is shown in his portrayal of the
Great Physician In Ills compassion for
the poor, helpless and suffering peo
ple. What untold good a skillful and
sympathetic Christian physiclnn can
do I No one gets so closely Into touch
with human life ns a doctor.
III. Luke the Companion of Paul
(Acts 10:9-15).
1. Paul's Need of a Physician. There
Is cleur evidence that Paul had some
physical ailment which made the serv
ice of a skillful physician most desir
able. When the call came to go to
Europe with the gospel, Luke Joined
Paul and became one of ids most help
ful companions. Tills is one example
Of what a faithful Christina physician
can do.
2. Luke's Fidelity. ‘‘Only Luke Is
with me.’ 1 He wns no mere far
away Mend. He stood by Paul in
storm and cnlm. Paul wns now in the
cold Jail awaiting execution. What a
great comfort It must have been to
know that tills faithful physician whb
with him. He was with him at Philip
pi, Miletus, Jerusalem, Caesarea, be
fore Felix and Festus, on the voyage
to Rome, with him in the Roman jail,
through the Roman trial, and perhaps
a spectator of ills execution. It cost
Luke a great deal to do this, but lie
DO doubt considered it a labor of love,
•ven feeling the cnll of God ns really
as Paul. Nothing is known of Luke
after Paul’s death. Tradition has some
Interesting things to say, hut no word
of certainty.

Courage.
Fear God, and tnke your own part.
There’s Bible in that, young man; see
how Moses feared God, and how lie
took ills own part against everybody
wlic meddled with him. And see liow
David feared God, and took ills own
part. ... So fear God, young
man, and never give in! The world
can bully, and Is fond, provided it sees
a man in a kind ol’ difficulty, of get
ting about him, calling him coarse
Dames, and even going so far ns to
hustle him; but the world, like all
bullies, carries n white feather in its
tall, and no sooner sees the man tak
ing off hls cont, and offering to fight
Its best, than it scatters here and
there, and is always civil to him af
terwards.—Borrow.
