OILING THE UNITED STATES.
Six and a half barrels of crude oil
was the per capita measure of con
sumption in the United States last
year while fifteen years ago it was
two barrels, according to a statement
submitted by George Otis Smith,
Director of the Geological Survey,
on the oil situation in the United
States at the present time. The
Director recalled the fact that the
Geological Survey as early as 1903
brought to the attention of the Sec
retary of the Interior the Govern
ment’s future needs for liquid fuel
for naval use. The demand put on
our oil industry for petroleum pro
ducts has doubled since the war. Nor
has consumption failed to keep pace
with this unexpected flood of oil.

In last week’s issue of The Pro
gress we read an article under the
heading, “Does God Want His People
to Be Poor?”
The writer of the article above re
ferred to has very clearly shown
what riches mean to the church, but
failed to show what they mean to
ward promoting the cause of Chris
tianity, for as we all know, it is pos
sible to be a good church member
and at the same time a stranger to
God. It is true that riches have
built fine churches and equipped them
with costly instruments of music and
a choir to relieve the congregation
of singing, and perhaps at no distant
dependence, and out of which have A. Easter Sunday occurs on

cellent church member). Jesus said
one thing yet lackest thou. That
was the thing that had prompted him
to come to Jesus to make this in
quiry, and that was the thing that
shut to him the door to eternal life.
What was it? Go sell all thou hast
and distribute it among the poor.
These were the fatal words that
doomed him to eternal dispair, and
he went away sorrowful. Jesus see
ing his attitude said, how hardly shall
they that have riches enter into the
kingdom of God. No question about
how we obtain riches, but the fact of
having them. I cannot believe that
Jesus was jesting with this man, or
his hearers about a matter that in
volved the eternal destiny of an im
mortal soul.
Again in Luke 19: We* find that
as Jesus journeyed through Jericho,
a multitude followed him, poor people
of course. The rich people never
gave him much trouble about follow
ing after him, because he taught
doctrine that was out of harmony
with their business. However, there
was a little fellow at Jericho named
Zacheus, he was rich and being small

get a view of this man Jesus as he
passed by and of whom he had heard
so much. Now it says that Zacheus
was a chief of sinners, and as Jesus
came near, he looked up and said,

that when Zacheus got through with
the question of charity and restitu

how fortunate it was for those poor
people that Zacheus considered them

question of a godly restitution he
might not have had half of his goods
left to be given to the poor.
