ANNOUNCING FOR OFFICE AND
S EL ECTIN G C A ND IDATES.
Prior to the lust primary held in
McDuffie county March the 19th, last,
there was about twenty-two candi
dates announced for office, and out
of this number, with possibly one
exception, not a single candidate at
tempted to place the responsibility
for their announcement on their many
or numerous friends as was once the
custom.
I have often wondered if candidates
who try to make it appear that hav
ing yielded to great pressure brought
to bear by their many or numerous
friends, (with the emphasis always
on any or numerous) and having
very roll ,f antly, and at great person
al sacrifice, as perhaps they would
have it appear, consented to allow
themselves to become a candidate for
office. Would they feel embarassed
if requested to specify the number
mah'ng specific mention of each -in
dividual name of those who had pre-

We have a very desirable 6 room house on Mil-
len street, with all modern improvements, large
lot, well drained. This can be bought for $3500,
terms.
On Black street we have a very desirable home.
6 room house, large lot, water and lights, well
drained lot, good place for the money—only
$2100.
One of the best propositions we have is a six-
room home on Railroad street, large lot, garage
splendid garden, and conveniences. The price
of this is only $2500. You can't build the house
for that.
Terms can be arranged on most any of the
above. Let us know your wishes and we will do
what we can to make a deal for you.
If you want farm property, or if you want to
sell farm property, we will do our best to make
a deal Farm property is probably cheaper now
than it will be later on.

vailed upon them to become a candi
date.
It is my personal opinion, that in
this day of greed and graft, corrupt
politicians, and unfaithful public
servants, that any man capable of
being quickened by a sense of honor,
or who cares for his integrity as a
citizen, would be very cautious about
soliciting candidates for office.
The custom of candidates placing
the responsibility for their announce
ments on "their “many or numerious
friends,” means about as much as
Itubo Goldberg’s Boobs, and prospec
tive candidates for the future should
realize that the practice has become
antiquated, and in the interest of
common frankness should be discon
tinued.
It is unfortunately true, that as a
people we have been indifferent to
our own interest, having for quite a
long while permitted a small bunch of
designing politicians to select our
candidates for office, while we as
voters would promptly respond on
election day and ratify the selected
man. The result has been that we
now find ourselves in the middle of
a bad fix, without being able to give
an intelligent account of how we got
there. However, is it not true?
That the professional politician is
always controlled by the big stick,
or the promotion of some selfish in
terest. Consequently, it is not essen-
ial to the success of said politician
hat he select some candidate that
he can control. Is it not equally
true, that the candidate thus selected,
will serve the power that made Ihe
selection to the exclusion and invari
able hurt of the rank and file who
by their votes ratified the selection
made.
Do you think this Government can
endure much longer under present
conditions without a reformation?
If so, lets take a brief inventory of
the situation and see how it looks.
At the seat of our National Gov
ernment we find Cabinet officers
being dismissed from office, guilty of
crimes, for which at one time they
would have been lined up and prompt
ly shot. We find United States Con
gressmen being sent to the peniten
tiary for boot-legging. We see Gov
ernors of states removed from office
and sent to the penitentiary for
crimes committed in office. We see
greed, graft and extravagance run
riot. While our people are being
taxed to the borders of bondage, and
when we inquire as to why this state
of affairs, the answer instinctively
comes back, that we have surrender
ed our interest into the hands of
politicians. J. P. W.

The Secret Of Success
The secret of success is hard work and
clear thinking. The industrious person
earns more than his necessary expenses,
and the thinking person saves this surplus
and deposits it in a GOOD STRONG BANK.
It is never too soon to begin saving. Get the
habit of saving. The sooner you start the
greater will be your success.
Financial success is simply a matter of
sticking to your saving habit—making your
character stronger than any temptation to
spend. Nobody saves much at a time. Ev
erybody can save a little at a time.
Try the saving habit and see how fast
the small change will grow into dollars, and
the dollars into tens and hundreds.
We invite you to start an account with
us. It will be appreciated, whether large or
small. We will give you Safety and Service.
