Spanish-American War Veterans.
Cedartown, Ga.. dune 13, 1904.
Will you be kind enough, for
the benefit of the Spanish War
Veterans, topublishjthe following
statement, and if it is not asking
too much, notice it editorially?
An act of Congress of 1898,
amended in April last, provides
for extra compensation for those
officers and men who enlisted in
the United States Army during
the Spanish War, and for those
who applied for enlistment and
rejected.
1. Those officers and men who
enlisted in the Georgia regiments
and artillery companies will re¬
ceive pay for the period between
date of assembly at the rendez¬
vous and the date they were mus¬
tered in the United States service.
2. Those who were rejected
will receive pay from dale ot as¬
sembly to date of rejection and
actual transportation.
This extra compensation will be
allowed, although the officers and
men have already been paid for
the same time.
, No information except the re¬
cords is needed as to those mus¬
tered in.
There are no records of those
who were rejected, and it will be
necessary for every one who was
rejected to write and give me the
following information:
1. Name he gave when he at¬
tempted to join.
2. Company or regiment he
attempted to join.
3. Place where he was exam¬
ined, and surgeon who examined
him, time between the date he
agreed to enlist and the date he
was rejected. How many days?
4. The actual cost of trans¬
portation from his home to plae<
he was examined and back to hi
home.
5. His present Post Office ad¬
dress.
It is exceedingly important
that I have this information at
the earliest possible time.
By the authority of the Gover¬
nor of Georgia, I will collect and
disburse the amount due under
this Act.
Those interested will address
all communications to the under¬
signed.

Mitchell County Boll Weevils.
From the Pelham Journal.
And now comes Mitchell coun¬
ty and claims the distinction of
having a farm infested with boll
weevils. Mr. Wilson a farmer liv¬
ing eashof Pelham came to the
city Tuesday with a number of
bugs which he claims is infest¬
ing his cotton and threatening
the destruction of his crop. The
bug bores into the young cotton
boll and causes it to fall off the
stalk.
Mr. Wilson says there are sev¬
eral acres on his farm infested
with the insect. Some of the
bugs were sent to the state en¬
tomologist for examination.
The Journal has no idea that it
is the luted Texas weevil but
feels assured that it is the same
as that which has been sent to
the state department of agricul¬
ture from different counties all
over the state and which the en¬
tomologist has declared is not the
boll weevil which has proven so
destructive to Texas crops.

I saw, on last Tuesday, three
of Mitchell county’s and one of
Thomas county’s most charming

of Mitchell’s handsomest young
men.

faces of two of Newton’s young
men that wont wear off soon.
