People Engaged In Farming.
Census reports give the number
of people actually engaged in
farming as the largest of any bus¬
iness in the United States. The
actual figures, according to the
last census, are 10,438,219, divid¬
ed into the following classifica¬
tion: Farmers, planters, dairy¬
men, dairywotnen, nurserymen,
gardeners, florists, stock raisers,
herders, drovers, foresters and
apiarists.
We are growing a little more
wheat, corn, oats, barley and
other grains each year. And we
also find use for the increased
production and an annual invita¬
tion to do a little better next time.
We must learn how to produce
two b'ades of grass where only
one is now growing.
The problem of supporting a
population that is doubled every
thirty years and still maintain
our export trade is up to every
farmer to solve.--Dawson News.

A WARNING TO SPORTSMEN.
It is Unlawful to Kill More Than
Fifteen Birds.
The local nimrods nave begun
ihe fall and winter campaign, and
every day some of them are in
field and wood with dog and gun.
There are some things in the
new game law that is well enough
to remember. The period from
November 1, to March.1, is open
season for quail, partridge,, phea¬
sant and wild turkey, but doves,
marsh hens and snipe may be
killed from July 15, to March 15,
while tiie open season tor summer
duck and woodcock is from Sep¬
tember 1. to February 1, and the
open season for deer is from Sep¬
tember 1- to January 1. For the
next two months at least practi¬
cally everything in this line is
legitimate game to the hunter.
Therb are several points in the
new law which may be of interest
to those who love a day in the
field with dog and gun. No per¬
son is permitted to kill more than
forty doves or more than fifteen
quail in one day. No one can
kill any game for the purpose of
selling it except on his own land,
unless, o f course, he obtains ex¬
plicit permission to hunt on the
land of others. ‘'.Pot hunters,’
as those who kill game for the
market are generally know, must
pay' a licensejee of $25 to the or¬
dinary of the county before they
can do business. It is strictly
against the law to ship any par¬
tridge or quail out of the state, no
matter where or by whom they
are killed.
The law prohibits hunting upon
the lands of another unless tho
sportsman bears a written permit
from the owner.

The business independence of
the South is more important than
her political independence. Yet
both should be sought after and
gained. Let the South quit try¬
ing to save the country and de¬
vote her efforts to saving and ag¬
grandizing herself. She is with¬
out friends in Yankeedom, and
her people will be fools to spend
any more time trying to win them.
Henceforth they should look only
to their own interests.—lahmae

A pretty story is connected
with the recent governorship race
in Minnesota in which the Demo¬
cratic candidate, J. A. Johnson,
was elected and which shows that
the people do not discredit' a
man because of his humble pa¬
rentage. His opponents circu¬
lated the report that Johnson’s
father died in the poor house and
that his mother had taken in
washing for a living. It seems
that this much was true, but they
didn’t finish toe story. A review
of Mr. Johnson’s life showed that
he went to work at a tender age
and lift-d the burden from his
mother. And although Roose¬
velt carried the state by 100,000
or more, Johnson won by 25,000.
