WILLIFORD NOT
TO HANG TODAY.
GOVERNOR TERRELL RES¬
PITES MITCHELL COUN¬
TY MURDERER
Till January 13—Evidence in the
Case to be Submitted to Pris¬
on Commission for Review,
and Commutation May be
Recommended.
(From Albany Herald, Dec. 27, 1904.)
Whitely Williford, the Mitchell
county negro murderer who was
to have been executed at Camilla
today, has been granted a new
tease of life by Governor Terrell.
News that a respite had been
granted was conveyed to Solici¬
tor-General W. E. Wooten early
last night. The Governor called
the Solicitor-General to the long
distance telephone and notified
him that Williford had been res¬
pited until the 13th, of January.
Similar notice was served on the
sheriff of Mitchell county.
The action of the Governor was
the result of certain representa¬
tions made to him by parties in¬
terested in the case, and his ac¬
tion was based officially on a de¬
sire to have the evidence review¬
ed by the Prison Commission.
Williford, it is remembered,
killed Harmon West and sarious
ly wounded Turner Cox in Mitch¬
ell county nearly two years ago.
West and Cox were pursuing Wil¬
liford under erroneous impression
that he was an escaped convict,
They had no warrant, and, it was
claimed by the defense, were
without legal authority to make
an arrest The negro finally
turned at bay in the loft of a
building at a turpentine sti 1
about ten miles from Bacon ton,
and it was there that he killed
one of his pursuers and seriously
wounded the other.
Not until last August was Wil¬
liford captured at a small place
in Florida. Judge Spence order
ed a special term of Mitchell Su¬
perior court in September, when
Williford was tried, convicted and
sentenced to hang today. The
case was appealed to the Supreme
court after motion for a new trial
had been denied, and the decision
of the lower court was affirmed.
Now the evidence in the ease will
be submitted to the Prison Com¬

mission for review, an>l it may be
that the Governor will be request¬
ed to commute the sentence to
imprisonment for life or for a
term of years.
Just what effect the action of
the Governor will have on public
sentiment in Mitohell county re¬
mains to be seen. When Willi¬
ford was tried a strong' military
guard, composed of more than a
hundred men, was provided, so
strong was the fear of the author
itiea that mob violence would be
attempted. Had the execution
taken place today as anticipated,
military protection would again
have been afforded the prisoner.
Williford is now in the Dough¬
erty county jail, where he has
been since the day of his convic¬
tion, and will probably remain
here pending the action of the
Prison Commission. He is natur¬
ally much elated that another
lease on life has been granted
him, and hopes the Prison Com¬
mission will recommend commu¬
tation of his sentence.
Romantic Marriage.
On last Sunday evening when
the train reached Baconton going
towards Albany, a stop of ten
minutes was made so as to allow
the union of two fond hearts in
wedlock. Rev. J. A- J. Dumas,
of Pelham, who was at Baconton
at the time was called and in the
shortest time possible performed
the ceremony that made Mr. B.
Y. Cooper, of Felham, and Miss
Inez Pugh, of Ohio, man and
wife, after which the train and
its happy passengers proceeded
on to Albany and other points for

The Enterprise understands
that the couple had met that day
for the first time, their acquain¬
tance, courtship and engagement
all having come about through
correspondence. They intended
to be married in Albany, but Rev.
Dumas, the groom’s pastor being
at Baconton, the conductor was
appealed to and yielded to their
wishes for the short stop in which
they gained one hour’s time on
the matrimonial sea.
The romantic marriage is said
to have occasioned a good deal
of interest among the passengers.
