The \gricultura! School Meeting.
A meeting was held in Pelham
last Tuesday afternoon, agree¬
able to the adjournment of a
previous meeting held in Camilla
two weeks ago, both of which
had for their purpose the putting
forth of an effort to secure for
Mitchell county the 2nd Con¬
gressional District Agricultural
and Mechanical School, soon to
be located somewhere within the
district.
The citizens of the Pelham dis¬
trict are alive to the question and
are energetic in their efforts' to
secure the school for the county.
Of course they want it for their
district and are willing to make
liberal donations to get it there,
at the same time it seems that
they have shown something of
spirit of liberality in the matter
by offering to center all interests
on a location lying between
two cities.
The editor of the Enterprise
fully intended to be present at
the Pelham meeting Tuesday,
and regrets that circumstances
were such as to prevent his at¬
tendance. The Enterprise is a
Mitchell county newspaper, and
as such, stands ready to work in
harmony with any section of the
county in an honest effort to se¬
cure such enterprises as will be
of benefit to the county, at the
same time we recognize the fact
that our first obligation is to Ca¬
milla and her interest, after
which it is our duty to serve the
entire county.
We are informed that Tues*
dav’s meeting at Pelham was
well attended and after a number
of talks on the question, sub¬
scription lists were opened and
a large sum subscribed to be
used in trying to secure the
school for Mitchell county.
There is noi’eason why M itchell
county should not secure this
school, unless it is simply a lack
of interest and county pride on
the part of her people as a whole.
There is not a better agricultural
county in the district, and she
lias advantages in being more
centrally located than most of
her competitors.
The Enterprise is aware of
the fact that to agitate bonds for
any purpose is unpopular in
Mitchell county, yet, in a matter
that is as important as the se¬
curing of this school, which
means so much for the farming
interest of the county, it would
not be a bad policy for the coun¬
to vote a limited amount of

bonds for the school.
Thus every tax payer would be
a small contributor to this im¬
portant enterprise and his pro¬
portion would be so small that he
would hardly know that he had
contribute!, then those who
hereafter move to the county in
order that they may secure the
benefits of the school, would be¬
come contributors and thus help
to pay for the benefits they would
receive. The suggestion is for
your consideiation.
Can Mitchell county afford to
let the Agricultural School go by
for want of concert of action on
the part of her citizens?
Railroads Caught Napping.
The railroads of the state will
have to come across with their
proportional share of the tax
• money for local school districts,
I where their lines run through
such districts, and that too, not¬
withstanding a former Snpreme
court decision that relieved them
of this tax.
The school adherents stole a
march on the roads and got
around the court’s interference
by having the recent legislature
enact a law eliminating the ob¬
jections, and now the railroads
must “come across’’ just like
any ordinary tax payer.
County Tax Rate Fixed At $6.00.
The Board of County Commis¬
sioners in their session at Camilla
Tuesday fixed the county tax rate
for this year at $6.00 on the
thousand. This is the same rate
that was fixed for this county last
year.
Tne state tax rate has been
fixed at $4 80 on the thousand,
which makes the total state and
county tax $10.80 on the thous¬
and. This is a reduction of 10
cents over last year, the reduc¬
tion being made in the state r#te.
The Enterprise feels satisfied
that the Commissioners have
made the county levy just as low
as the demands against the coun¬
ty will admit, at the same time it
did hope that, in view of the fact
that the taxable values in the
county had increased over a half
million dollars, there would bo a
decided decrease in the county
levy.
