VOLUME V.
Mr. Neufville Bailey Dead. I
It was indeed a shock to ’the | I
family and friends of Mr. and
Mrs. J. H. Bailey, when the tele-!
gram was received last Sunday
morning announcing the death
of Mr. Neufville Bailey, which
sad event occurred at his home
in Millen, Ga., Saturday night
after a short illness from mala
rial fever.
The remains were brought to
Camilla by his brother, Mr. J.
H. Bailey, Jr., arriving Monday
morning at 8:45 and after an im*
pressive funeral service at the
home on Broad street at 10:30,
conducted by Rev. W. M. Blitch,
of the Methodist church, the re¬
mains were taken in charge by
the Knights of Pythias of Camilla
Lodge, and laid to rest with the
honors of the order in the old
cemetery.
Mr. Nevfville Bailey was the
second son of Mr. and Mr. J. H.
Bailey and was held in high
esteem by all who knew him, and
it was remarked by those who
had known him in his young
manhood, that he was a model
young man, honest in every pur¬
pose, faithful to duty, true to
his friends and loving anl atten¬
tive to his family.
For a number of years he
made his home in Savannah
where he was in the employ of
the Millen & Southwestern Rail¬
road Co., as a machinist, but as
a recognition of his ability and
worth, he was recently promoted
to the position of superintendent
of the shops at Millen, to which
place he moved his family a few
months ago. and it is indeed sad
that, just when his ability was
beginning to receive just recog¬
nition, he should be called upon
to leave it all, at the same time it
is a goodly heritage that he has
left to his family, that of an hon
orable name
He leaves a wife and two small
children, besides his parents,
brothers and sister, and a host
of friends to mourn his death, to
all of whom the Enterprise ex¬
tends sympathy.
Race Riot In Atlanta.
The Enterprise has, for the
past few months been expecting
to hear of a race riot in Atlanta,
because of the repeated reports
of assaults made on white women
by negro men. Pour was report¬
ed as having occuried last Sat¬
urday. This was more than the
people could stand. Forbear¬
ance was, for the time, at an end,

New Amendments To Be
Submitted To Our Voters.
Three amendments to the state
constitution will be voted on by
the people in the state election,
on the first Wednesday in Oc¬
tober. Secretary of State Philip
Cook is now preparing the blanks
to be sent out for this purpose
and for the election of state
house officers.
The most important among
these constitutional amendments
is that providing for the crea¬
tion of a state court of ap¬
peals of three judges, to be elec¬
ted by the people. This court ; s
to be created for the purpose of
relieving the supreme court of
its heavy burden, which has been
growing to such an extent in re¬
cent years that it is practically
impossible for that court to get
through with its docket .during
the prescribed terms. It is esti¬
mated that this court of appeals
will relieve the supreme court of
about forty per cent of its busi¬
ness. The judges are to receive
$4,000 a year, the same as the
judges of the supreme court.
There seems to be no doubt that
the people will approve this con¬
stitutional amendment at the
coming election.
Another constitutional amend¬
ment passed by the legislature
of 1905 provides for relief for
superior courts in certain sec¬
tions where the docket becomes
crowded. This amendment sim
ply gives the legislature powei
and authority to provide lor an
additional judge in any circuit
where the amount of business is
such as to demand it.
The only other constitutional
amendment to be voted on at this
election provides for the creation
of Ben Hill county, with Fitzger¬
ald as the county seat. This bill
provides both fyr the necessary
amendment to the constitution,
and at the same time for the cre¬
ation of the new county. If it
passes by vote of the people,
Georgia will have 146 counties.
and as a result a mob was soon
formed who attacked every ne¬
gro who catne in sight, and for
several hours pandemonium
reigned.
The entire police force with
several companies of militia were
called out and the trouble stop¬
ped, but not until between fifteen
and twenty negroes had been
killed and a number wounded.
At present everything is re¬
ported quiet in and around At¬
and no further trouble is
feared.
