THE PELHAM JOURNAL, FRIDAY, AUGUST 28, 1908.
The Agricultural School
at Tifton.
Mr. J. L. Hand, who is one of
the valued and enthusiastic mem¬
bers of the Board of Trustees of
the second district agricultural
school attended a meeting of this
board at Albany Friday. At this
meeting many important matters
were disposed of and steps taken
tq make prominent the advanta¬
ges of the school.
The school at Tifton is a splendid
institution. The county of Tift, has
expended $97,500 in establishing it.
Of this sum, $60,000 was in cash, the
remainder being in land donated for
the site of the institution. The
school has 315 acres of farm land,
which this year produced enough
feed-stuffs t° supply all the stock of
the institution during the coming
winter season. The buildings and
grounds are lighted by electricity,
have a flue system of sewerage and
an artesian well. The buildings
have all been completed with the ex¬
ception of a large dining hall and
the cottages for the teachers, who
will occupy quarters in the dormi¬
tories until the cottages are com¬
pleted. The dining hall is now in
course of construction, the one here¬
tofore in use having been only tem¬
porary.
The school has received from the
state, since it was opened at the be¬
ginning of the last school year, the
sum of $7,000.
It was decided that for the com¬
ing term live boys and three girls
would be admitted from each coun¬
ty—a total of 144 students. If any
county has more than the prescribed
number of applicants, selection will
be made by means of coinpetive ex¬
aminations. If any county sends
less than the maximum number of
students allotted to each county,
some other county may send enough
students to make up the difference.
Owing to tiie difficulty in getting a
full meeting of the board of trustees,
it was decided to elect a board of
control, which will have the power
to transact business for the board of
trustees. The membership of the
NiWkte ag lollows : Ju dg^, Frank
Park, chairman; A. J. Lippitt, J. L.
Hand, J. B. Wight, J. B. Norman,
Jr., and J. L. Pickard.
W. W. Driscoll was re-elected
principal of the school, and L. H.
Freeman was chosen assistant prin¬
cipal. K. C. Moore will be agricul
turlist, and Mbs Rosalie Lasseter
will have charge of the department
of domestic science. In addition to
these there will be two other in¬
structors on the faculty.
The trustees in their meeting de¬
termined to put the school promi¬
nently before the people of the dis¬
trict.
The manner in which those inter¬
ested in the Second District Agri¬
cultural School are going at the task
of making it a success augurs well
for its future. Already it has been
established on a footing which
speaks volumes for the earnest work
that has been done by the trustees,
the people of Tift county, and others
who have interested themselves in
its behalf. It is confidentially pre¬
dicted by all who are familiar with
what planned has, been done and with what
is for the future that the
school will become one of the most
useful and influential institutions of
learning in the entire district.
Found Dead in Bed.
The young son of Mr. M. A.
Dey was found dead in bed Fri¬
day morning. The indications
were that the boy had been dead
some time when found. It is not
known what time of the night he
passed away. It is presumed he
died without a pain or a struggle,
R3 there was nothing to indicate
it. The boy was afflicted and
had been in bad health a num¬
ber of years.
The burial services which were
conducted by Rev. Jesse M. Dodd
took place at the cemetery. No
inquest was held over the body
because there was no doubt on
the part of bis father that he
died from natural causes.
