Birds That Play.
Some birds, like all children,
like to play, and Australia and
New Guinea produce the “bower
bird,” which "builds regular play¬
houses. These houses are not a
part of their nests, but are con¬
structed usually in the shape of
covered archways of little bough?
two or three feet long, eighteen
inches high and about as wide
They use these houses simply for
their games, as if they were club
houses. Generally these play
houses are decorated with bright
colored shells and feathers, just
as children decorate their play¬
houses.

Forest Fires Spreading.
All efforts to extinguish the
forest fires on Monte Sano,in Ala¬
bama, which have been spread¬
ing for a week, have failed
and a number of summer cottages
on the inoun' a ns near Hunts
ville, Ala., are threatend. Mes¬
sages state that the fires are rag¬
ing in the northern part of Lime¬
stone county, and that much fine
timber has been destroyed. The
fires are supposed to have been
caused by careless hunters.
Watched Fifteen Years.
“For fifteen years I have watched
the working of Bucklen s Arnica
Halve, and it has never failed to cure
any sore, boil, ulcer or burn to which
it was applied. It has saved us many
a doctor bill,” says A. F. Hardy, of
East Wilton, Maine. 25e at Hill &
King’s drug store.

Beaten by Night Riders.
Moultrie, Nov. 6.—C. F. Wil¬
liams was fired upon, knocked
down and beaten by unknown
men, supposed to be night riders,
at this place last night.
Mr. Williams is one of our best
and most peaceable citizens, and
without known enemies. The in¬
truders—three or four in number
—were prowling around the room
of Mr. Williams, trying to break
in. When ordered off they refused
to go. While they were on the
/eranda trying to make an en¬
trance, Mr. Williams opened the
door and fired several shots at
them. They knocked him down
and beat him. They fired ten or
fifteen shots at him as he escaped
back in his room.
Mr. Williams’ room is on South
Broad street, in one of the most
thickly settled portions of town,
in the home of W. J. Schell.
