Th* Hud Waiter's Lang Walk.
Have you any Idea of bow much
ground a head waiter covers in per¬
forming bis day’s work? At one of
the best known family or apartment
hotels In New York, which boasts of a
long, narrow dluiug room, the matter
was recently put to the test, and the
head waiter was armed with a pedom¬
eter when he went on duty at 7
a. m. When be retired after the dlu
ner hour he had covered ten miles and
a fraction.
He asserts that this long record of
distance covered in a single room is
largely the result of the telephone and
the social life of the apartment hotel
He not only must seat all patrons, but
he personally carries to them the
names of callers and all summonses
to the telephone. The latter, he says,
Is one of the greatest annoyances the
head waiter undergoes. — New York
World.
HU Whole Duty.
It Is not often that one man Is called
upon to assume the duties of an army,
Such a case Is on record, however, and
is cited in Benjamin Willey’* "History
of the White Mountains.” At the first
legal meeting of the citizens of the lit¬
tle town of Albany, N. H., every sui¬
f dfSi \ the p!*Ar was summoned tc
te mbie.
The officers were duly chosen, but ft
turned out there was only one private.
Looking wistfully at his superiors In
array before him, the solitary repre¬
sentative of the ranks said:
"Gentlemen, 1 have one request to
make—that Is, as I am the only soldier,
I hope you will not be too severe In
drilling me, but will spare me a little,
as 1 may be needed another time.”
He also remarked that he could form
a solid column, but that “it racked
him shockingly to deploy.”
Darwin’s Modesty.
On Sunday afternoon Sir John Lub¬
bock, our host, took us all up to the
hilltop whence In his quiet Kentish
village Darwin was shaking the world.
The illustrious pair, born in the same
year, had never met before. Mr. Glad¬
stone as soon as seated took Darwin’s
interest in lessons of* massacre for
granted and launched forth his thun¬
derbolts with unexhausted zest. His
great, wise, simple and truth loving lis¬
tener, then, 1 think, busy on digestive
powers of the drosera in bis green¬
house, was Intensely delighted. When
we broke up, watching Mr. Gladstone s
erect, alert figure as he walked away,
Darwin, shading his eyes with his
hand against the evening rays, said to
me in unaffected satisfaction, “What
an honor that such a great man should
come to visit me!”—Morley’s “Life of
Gladstone.”
Can Only Oe Three Feet Deep.
I know an institution with wide,
rolling fields all about it There are
exceptional privileges here. A brook
sparkles and splashes its way through
the wood, and every summer after¬
noon at the ringing of a bell the boys
are marched down there for a swim.
A placid faced lady to whose care
they are intrusted selects the locality,
and they may not go one bush beyond.
“They dassent go in only three feet
deep!” pityingly explained the farm¬
er’s boy who was telltug me. “Us fel¬
lows swims nine feet deep!” And he
trudged off down the road whistling
Joyously between bites of a green ap¬
ple. There was a lilting note to the
tune and an energetic swing to the
shoulders. It takes green apples and
swimming holes nine feet deep to
make the best men. They know how
to breast the deep places in life. Over
against this picture I could see hun¬
dreds of boys marching in regular
step who all through the world are go¬
ing to be limited to places three feet
deep. But an institution must have
Its boundaries if it is bringing up boys
by wholesale.—Mabel Potter Daggett

THE PELHAM JOURNAL, FRIDAY, DEC. II, 1908
A clever Swindler.
An elegantly dressed man entered a
Paris Jeweler’s store and asked to see
some expensive rings. While be was
examining them critically the shop
door opened and a ragged and Impor¬
tunate old beggar woman hobbled In.
The shopman hastened to eject the
Intruder, the customer in the mean¬
time commenting severely on (he neg¬
ligence of the police tn permitting beg¬
ging. Nevertheless be handed alms
to the poor old creature, who blessed
him and vanished. After further ex¬
amination of the rings the customer
said that he would call again.
Rut Just then the Jeweler missed a
ring worth 800 francs. Not finding
it anywhere, he accused the customer
of Having taken It. The result was
such a storm of protest and of de¬
mands to be searched that the jeweler
apologized, and his visitor departed
However, he Informed the police of
his loss They arrested a drunken
beggar woman In the course of the
evening, and It turned out that tt was
she who had come into the jeweler’s
shop. The man had arranged outside
to give her 20 francs to conn. In and
take a ring, which she was to give
hack to him afterward

Speed of Flight of Pigeons.
Of our game birds the moat grega¬
rious and most beautiful passenger
,>fgeon, now unhappily practically ex¬
tinct, is or was doubtless the most
rapid of continuous fliers, yet to a to¬
tal length of about sixteen and one
fourth Inches Its wing’s length is
about seven and etght-tenths Inches, a
proportion less favorable for speed
than with certain other less rapid spe¬
cies of its family. Their sustained
speed certainly exceeded a mile a min
ute, and some authorities have esti¬
mated it as high as 120 miles per
hour. The fact often quoted that
the wild rice of the Carolines was
sometimes found in the stomachs of
birds shot in Canada shows both mar¬
velous speed and endurance.—Outing,
His Wife’s Word Was Law.
In the British army the mustache
whs ordered to be worn by both offl
cers and men Just after the Crimean
war. Just before Sir Colin Campbell
(afterward Lord Clyde) left England
for India to undertake tbe work of
suppressing the mutiny he perceived
a captain of Infantry with a clean
shaved upper lip. The general sharp¬
ly ordered his subordinate to attend
to regulations, when the captain re
