Mr. Tanner Blackshear brought a
pea bloom into our office last week as
we were going to press, when it was
too late to make mention of it in that
issue, and now pea blooms are so
common that it is too late to mention
it at all. But it is no news that the
garden from which is came it gener
ally the best, as well as tho earliest,
in the county. *
Dr. Joseph Forbes with his wifo
passed through Dublin on last Sun
day on his way to Stophensvillo
where he has located to practice his
profession, lie comes from Dooly
county where ho has been practicing
physic since ho graduated at the At
lanta Medical College six yearn ago.

age.

tional Hotel in Macon and opened a

from Burke’s Book Store. Wo spent
two days last week at this excellent
house, failing sumptuously every
meal. The Colonel’s old friends wiljp
all please note tho change, ami those
who have not heretofore patronized
him will do well to give him a trial.
The best of faro at the most reason
able rates.
We spent last Friday night pleas
antly and profitably in Cochran. The
business men of the place are un
matched for enterprise and liberality.
They have won the good will of tho
people of Laurens and have- drawn
off from Dublin and Toombsboro the
trade of oue of the best sections of
our county. Col. J. A. Thomas
kindly took ns in his elegant pliteton
behind a splendid span of fast ponies
and showed us tho town. Numerous
improvements in the.wayof church
es, academies, business houses and
private residences arc ei tlier rapidly
going up or else are in. immediate
contemplation. The Post is liber
ally patronized by tho business men
of Cochran and wo are sure they will
find the money spent in that way a
good investment. The people will
sustain thoso who sustain the people's
paper.
Oeonee.
Since the Dublin merchants havo
commenced to ship their freights to
Ocouee station it is apparent that a
now warehouse must be built at that
ilaco. The little building in which
height is stored at present is only
about 20 x 30 feet, and is utterly in
adequate to the wants of our mer
chants. But Mr. Wadley says he
doesn’t intend to tear down the first
brick warehouse ever built for the
Central Rond. He built it with his
own means when the road was unable
to do it, and lie wants it .to, stand as
a memento of the straits through
which ho has brought that mighty
corporation. But Mr. Wadlcy’s
practical judgement will doubtless
get the better of thig pleasant bit of
sentimentalism when once he sees
Oconee settled on as the permanent
shipping point: for Dublin, The
railroad has built a warehouse at the
river, two miles from tho station,
and placed an engine in position to
lower freights to the Colville. But
as it will bo a long time Before the
steamboat csin be relied on to make
regular trips, our merchants will in
sist on having their goods put off at
the station where they will bo acces
sible to the wagons in case the boat
is hung up. So Mr. Wadley’s little
memento, like the Chinese, “must
go.”
An Unnecessary Assault.
On last Monday ubout 1 o’clock
the marshal, J. VV. Wright, arrested
W. R. Scarborough near Howard’s
bar and started with him to the
guard-house. When they had pro
ceeded about half way, Scarborough
begun to pull back, whereupon
Wright let him loose and struck him
with liis whole might on the head
with his club, cutting a frightful
gash over his left eye to the skull
bone more than two inches long.
Scarborough fell like a beef shot and
lay for a while as if dead, tho blood
gushing profusely over his face and
clothes,—and all this merely for tho
offence of pulling buck. A half
dozen responsible oye witnesses gave
us these facts. If the municipal au
thorities can’t or won’t protect tho
citizens of the county from abuse
when inside tho‘ incorporation, the
Grand Jury should.
Since writing tho above wo
learn that Scarborough lmd. made
two offorts to wrench the club
from Wright’s hand — but this
was some time before tho assault.
Tho facts aro as above stated, and
tho assault is without excuse. It is
an officer’s duty to summons assist
ance suffieiont to enable him to exe
cute the law without jeopardizing
the livos of citizens, especially in the
case of potty offences. .*
