8 CROUP, WHOOPING COUGH
Head report of tho treasurer of
town council in this paper. While
tho report is not very full, it is far
ahead of any that 1ms been given to
the public by any treasurer for the
past three years. In fact, it is tho
only attempt at a report within three
years. It would have doubtless been
bettor if the treasurer had givon to
the publio tho different sources from
which the aggregate amount accrued
and it would have been more ex
plicit and easier understood. Ho
will, wo are reliably informed, give
to the taxpayers his report far the
third quarter aftor its expiration,
whioh is only a few days off.
Sheriff Hu at, of Pulaski county,
came over from Hawkitisville Sun
day and was accompanied back by
Dave Paul, who has been in our jail
for several days under a chargo of
having 0 stolen n watch from Mr.
White, of the above named place,
and upon whom the watch was found.
It seems that Paul has told two djf-
rerent tales about how ho oamo in
posession of the watch. Oue was
that ha bought it from a negro, and
the other that it was a present to
him from a brother.
It another part of this paper may
be seen the proclamation of the gov
ernor, offering a reward of oho hun
dred and fifiy dollars for tho capture
and delivery of Joseph M. Weaver,
who was sentenced at tho January
oourt to fifteen years’ imprisonment,
and who escaped beforo ho was turn
ed over to the penitentiary authori
ties. There is another reward, of
one hundred dollars, offored by the
sheriff, making it two hundred and
fifty dollars. *
A wagon load of armed men won't
out last Saturday evening to capture
Joe Weaver, who they supposed was
in the neighborhood of John Baf-
field’s. Tliey remained in search all
night but failed to, make any dis
coveries as to his whereabouts. It
appears to us that going m such
crowds is the wrong way to goat it
—but thon everono is supposed to
have a way to overtake a fugitive
from jtistice-for their coming, inten
tions, and.'plans, even, generally go
in advance of the crowd.

It is believed by a good many that
the peach crop this year will be very
light, owing to tho recent frosts; that
whilo the fruit crop is not all killed
outright, that that remains on tho

quality. It is hoped, however, that
the damage resulting from tho cold
will not be as great as many seem to
fear.
